It is natural to want to take care of your family members, especially when it seems like they can’t take care of themselves. However, there can be a point when it becomes a burden, and in those times it is healthy to reconsider your boundaries. One woman did just that when her brother and his mistress refused to pay rent for five months, forcing the woman to work overtime and struggle to support her own kids.
The woman decided to evict her brother and his pregnant mistress from her rental house. Ever since then she has been receiving non-stop calls from family members, mainly her mother, saying she was wrong for what she did and that she is the reason why her niece and her unborn baby are homeless. She began to feel conflicted and decided to post her story on Reddit to get some advice and to see if she was really in the wrong for evicting her family.
The woman also explained that her brother is 51 and his mistress is 47, and both of them refuse to get jobs or contribute any money to rent and utilities. She has also considered taking in her brother’s children so they wouldn’t be taken away by Child Protective Services but said it would be a challenging adjustment for her own kids.
Users on Reddit agreed that the woman was doing the right thing by trying to get her brother to take responsibility for his life and children. Keep reading to learn more about this woman’s story and to see more reactions from others on Reddit.

In her Reddit post, the woman shared that her brother is married with five children but had an affair and got his mistress pregnant. She wrote:
“I ended up having a lot of family pressure to allow my Brother’s mistress and my niece to move into my rental. To try and create a stable environment for my niece. Eventually, I agreed to allow them to move in with a couple of conditions ... The mistress quickly agreed. Since the rent is extremely cheap and lets us know she will be starting her new job soon.”
The mistress did not keep her word about getting a job. “The first month I received half the rent. Then the last 5 months nothing at all. It’s become a burden for me to keep them there. I am working additional hours to cover the expenses. My brother’s mistress never went to work. I have tried and tried to talk to them … It’s going nowhere. I gave his mistress a 30-day notice to move. During that time I found out she is pregnant with baby #2. My brother’s wife kicked him out and he moved into my rental with his mistress,” the woman shared.
Despite the sister’s attempts to reach out to her brother and his mistress, she never heard back. She added, “They didn’t leave after the 30 days. They ignored my attempts to talk to them. So I served a 5-day notice. Still no reply. So I went to the court and filed for an eviction ... My dad told me to finish it. He feels like my brother needs to ‘man up’ and take care of his kids. Both from his wife and mistress. My dad told me to put my kids first.”

The woman continued, “My mom however is livid. She told me that I would be responsible if my niece and the new baby will be taken away from cps. She said my kids are old enough to understand mommy working extra hours in the name of ‘supporting family.’ She feels like I should continue working overtime and paying for their expenses until the new baby arrives in 7 months.”
Over 600 people commented on the woman’s post, and nearly everyone agreed that she was doing the right thing. “You owe them nothing, and they are solely responsible for the position their children are put in. That is not at all your responsibility,” one person commented.
Another person added, “Also, look at it from a law point of view. You have a contract, they broke the contract. Evict them. This is directly impacting your household's finances and earning potential.”
Others felt strongly that the woman’s mother was also capable of taking care of her grandchildren and the responsibility shouldn’t be solely on the sister.
A commenter wrote, “Also, if Mum cares so much about the kids, why doesn’t she pick up some additional work to pay for the rent, etc, instead of expecting OP to do it all? My guess is her attitude to the situation would change if that was the solution.”
The woman also wrote in a comment on her post that her brother’s wife and five children live with the wife’s parents. She explained, “They moved in with her parents when my brother decided he didn’t want to work anymore. He has gone through jobs most of his life but, always found a different one. Until this all began with his mistress.”
