Most of us are totally unaware of the number of blessings we receive on a daily basis. A few examples are access to clean water, uncontaminated air to breathe, an unfailing electrical grid and so on.

One item that millions of people across the globe take for granted is shoes. But for one woman in Uganda, the gift of a pair of shoes was not something she expected to receive. It is well-known that many individuals living in sub-Saharan Africa live in some tough situations.

Statistics listed by the Borgen Project would likely make you cry. Among the most chilling of these statistics is the fact that one-third of the people who inhabit this area of the world do not get enough food to eat. Also, 75 percent of the world's poorest nations exist in the region.

Half a billion subharan Africans are without electricity and are forced to burn wood for energy. But one major problem in the region may go unnoticed at first glance. The disease podoconiosis is similar to elephantiasis. Dr. Gail Davey explained to The Guardian that there is a clear link has been established between the disease podoconiosis and not wearing shoes.

This disease strain does not result from parasites as others do. Instead, it is caused by walking on volcanic soil with bare feet. Davey says the condition is reversible even in its advanced stages. The doctor says careful hygiene practices along with bandaging can instigate the healing process. She says that shoes and socks are also needed to protect the feet.

This may be the reason for the extraordinary reaction from a woman in Uganda when she was given a pair of shoes. Laura Grier says she was riding in a car when she saw a woman who was not wearing shoes. She told Newsflare that she asked her driver to stop so that she could give the woman the shoes she was wearing. Little did Grier know, the woman had never owned a pair of shoes in her life. Grier said, "The woman was barefoot and had never owned shoes before. We stopped the car to pull over and give them to her."

The video of the woman's joy at receiving the shoes is sure to warm the most cynical of hearts. When the first shoe was placed on her foot she gave a thumbs-up gesture to Grier. Once the other shoe was on her foot she danced with joy. While she danced, she showed the brightest smile that has ever been seen.
