Woman Criticized For Not Upgrading Her ‘Small’ Engagement Ring That Cost Less Than $1,000

Falling in love is one of the most beautiful feelings a person can experience. It can be exciting and terrifying all at the same time, and the idea of getting to spend the rest of your life with your “forever” person can be truly life-changing and magical. These are just a few of the many reasons why getting engaged – and later married! – is such a memorable experience.

There is a lot of planning that goes into a proposal, as one partner needs to figure out when they are going to propose, where they are going to pop the important question and what the ring will look like. Some people like to pick out their ring ahead of time to make sure it’s as perfect as possible, while others are completely surprised by what their loved one hand-picked themselves!

Social media mogul Rachel Pederson was completely blown away by the engagement ring her partner Poul Pederson gave her. The happy couple first met back in October 2013 after Rachel’s best friend set her up with her husband’s brother. Rachel and Poul had an amazing date at a diner in Minnesota and embarked on a whirlwind romance. At the time, Poul was a window washer and Rachel was a single mother.

While many people have shown their support for the love birds over the years, some people have shamed Rachel for the small engagement ring Poul proposed with and even told her that she should upgrade it. However, it’s clear that their love is bigger than any diamond could ever be, as Rachel has continued to profess her love for both Poul and her sentimental piece of jewelry.

According to The Knot, Poul confessed his love for Rachel just one week after they first met – and the feeling was mutual! “Initially we were going to wait six months so people didn’t think we were crazy,” Rachel said. “Just a few days after that, we determined we would elope and get started on our life together.”

After 13 days of knowing each other, Rachel and Poul tied the knot at the Chapel of Love at the Mall of America. It was so fast that Rachel hadn’t even expected Poul to get her an engagement ring. “His surprise meant the world to me,” she said.

Unfortunately, not everyone was as thrilled with the ring as Rachel was. According to The Knot, her ring is a one-quarter carat diamond ring. As of 2021, the average engagement ring size is 1.5 carats.

Rachel explained in an Instagram post from 2020:

“Yes, I know that my wedding ring is small. Friends and family often ask me when I’m going to have it ‘upgraded’... After all, it doesn’t represent the level of success we are achieving. I’ve even had one person say ‘you could wear a bigger ring for important events, so people don’t think you’re not successful.’ Wait a minute… since when did the size of someone’s ring become an indication of success?”

The Knot reported that Poul spent less than $1,000 for the diamond and band. “He had spent all he had to buy me the ring, and that was incredibly special,” Rachel said.

She added, “He drained his sayings to gift me with a small token of his love. I say small, only because it pales in comparison with how big his love is, even now, after years of marriage. That, my friends, is success to me.”
