In a humurous YouTube video that's spreading across the internet, Garnetta Rickett parodies Dolly Parton's Jolene by performing a COVID-19 version of the hit song. Rickett, who posted the video to her channel in March of 2020, has already accumulated tens of thousands of views.

Garnetta's version was so succesful that it attracted the attention of various media outlets, including Bob & Sheri Mornings. On the YouTube show, hosts Bob and Sheri ask Garnetta what inspired this particular parody. Her reply could make anyone snicker. She answered that a lot of her friends at the time had complained about boyfriends and husbands misbehaving.

Garnetta certainly found a perky way to sympathize with those friends!

What's so funny about this parody? Well, the lyrics tell a different story, certainly not making the same plea as that in Parton's classic. Instead of asking Jolene to hit the road, Garnetta is asking her to take the man away. She takes “please don’t take my man" and changes the lyrics to “please come to get my man.” Being stuck in quarantine with someone all this time can change your priorities. “He’s big and strong, like a bear, he even has all his hair, but I cannot stand him, Jolene," she adds later in the song.

The parody's lyrics continue to complain about her partner's bad habits, including his smelly feet, and the fact that all he does is sleep and eat. After a sip of wine to steady herself, she continues her entreaty to Jolene by saying that the quarantine is to blame: “I just can’t hardly see spending another minute with him.”

In her interview with Bob and Sheri, Garnetta reveals that she's been in quarantine for quite a long time given that she's taking care of her 76-year-old mother, and thus it's understandable why Garnetta might be a bit stir crazy.

In any case, we wonder what Dolly Parton would think of this cover should she see it. For most viewers, it's been a welcome addition to the many parodies and performances that have come out in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. As one commenter from Zimbabwe put it: "This is hilarious. We need this humor in these trying times [...] Thanks for making me laugh."
