When people hear the word angel, the first thing that comes to mind is a guardian angel looking after humans on earth. Well, that is if you do believe in angels. Some think about their little ones when they hear the word angel. After all, babies or little kids bring light into the homes of every family. But in December 2022, a woman was dubbed a “true angel in Buffalo” after she saved the life of a mentally disabled man in the middle of a winter storm.

A deadly blizzard hit Northern America on Christmas in 2022 which affected hundreds of thousands of people. By Dec. 27, 2022, the death toll in upstate New York alone hit 33. While others bravely fought for their lives and managed to survive on their own, one person, though, survived with the help of someone who became his angel in real life.

A woman went viral after she saved the life of a mentally disabled man who got lost in a blizzard and eventually ended up getting trapped outside his home.

On the morning of Christmas eve, Sha’Kyra Aughtry heard a cry for help. So, she told her boyfriend Trent to open the door. When she saw a 64-year-old man named Joey White caught in a pile of snow, she asked her boyfriend to bring him inside their house.

Sha’Kyra went live on Facebook to seek help after the frostbite on both White’s hands had turned into gangrene.

While inside her house, Sha’Kyra also provided a blanket to keep him warm as well as fed him with some food.

It would take more than 24 hours before responders reached her house. So, when residents saw the viral post, local residents helped one another to plow the snow outside and brought White to a nearby hospital.

While on the way to the hospital, Sha’Kyra told Joe: “Look at me, Joe. Don't cry. Don't cry ... We're friends for life now.”

Ray Barker, the program director at the New Park Theater praised Sha’Kyra in an interview with The Independent, as he said not all people would have done what she did for White.

“This woman did what I think a lot of people wouldn’t do which is to respond to another human being in dire need and help him and take care of him. I think she knew he was in real trouble and she saved him,” Barker said.

But the story behind it is even more touching.

Angela Aughtry recalled in an interview with the New York Post what her sister Sha’Kyra went through in February 2019 when their brother Darryal Aughtry was shot and crawled to his sister’s doorstep.

What happened to White was almost similar to what happened to their brother Darryal, only the latter succumbed to gunshot injuries.

“She was like, ‘You know, that’s like the equivalent to our brother passing away’ — she can’t have that happen again,’’ Angela said.

The two sisters turned emotional while having a conversation about what happened that night. “We both started crying,’’ Angela said.

Everything started coming back to Sha’Kyra that night, which she didn’t want to happen again.

“(Sha’Kyra) said everything got replayed. … How she heard (White) crying outside the door and she couldn’t leave him out there because the same thing happened to our brother,” she said.

Describing her sister’s heart as “big,” Angela said: “She said if Joey was left out there any longer, he could have froze to death.”

The magic of Christmas definitely worked that day!
