In March of 1995, singer Joan Osborne released a top-selling track entitled “What If God Was One Of Us.” The song reached the top 40 charts and later went on to become nominated for 3 awards at the Grammy’s.

The song had heartwarming lyrics that helped listeners of the track to change their mindset on how they see the world. It was a life-altering single that posed questions about how we treat others.

What if treating each other in a nicer fashion could result in something life changing? For one young woman, Casey Fischer, her life was changed forever after following the song’s advice and treating a stranger with kindness.

Fischer was grabbing a coffee at her local Dunkin’ Donuts when she witnessed something that changed her life forever. A homeless man was picking up loose change along the sidewalk. She then watched him come inside the building and begin counting his findings.

When she began talking to the man, she realized he had only accumulated around a dollar. Out of the kindness of her heart, she decided to buy him a beverage and a bagel for breakfast from her own money.

When Fischer made her decision, she asked the man to sit down and have a chat with her. He agreed.

Through their conversation, she learned that the homeless man had a name: Chris. Chris complained about being treated poorly by others due to his status as a homeless person.

He also opened up about his struggles with drug abuse, and how they made him into somebody that he didn’t recognize anymore. He lost his mother to cancer but had always wanted to make her proud since her passing. The two chatted for over an hour before Fischer realized she was running late for class. That’s when Chris told her to wait a minute.

She witnessed Chris scribble something on an old receipt and he handed it to her before she left.

After apologizing for his poor handwriting, he smiled and left. When Fischer opened the note, she wasn’t ready for the heartwarming message that she was about to receive.

The note said, “I wanted to kill myself today, but because of you I now do not. Thank you, beautiful person.”

Who knew that having a bagel and coffee with a stranger was about to have such a significant impact on her life?

Joan Osborne’s song makes us question how we treat others. What if God was one of us, or was working through us to help the world? How would you treat a homeless stranger on the street? The answer could change your life forever.
