Woman Asks Parents To Help With Newborn, Draws Flak For Telling Them To Rent Accommodation

Being pregnant can be challenging for some women. Some may find it painful physically along the way while others might need emotional support every step of the way. Some find it tough during their first pregnancy while others find it even more difficult in their third trimester. The pain can also be hard to go through, depending on the trimester they are in. Either way, women need support throughout their pregnancy journey. And often, the best way to handle the situation is to have someone by their side.

While the presence of one’s partner is especially important, having parents — especially moms — stay with you can be very helpful. After all, moms have been through the same situation before so they most definitely know how to handle pregnancies. One pregnant woman revealed on Reddit that she asked her mom to come over to her house to help her cope with the challenges that came with her pregnancy. Naturally, one would expect that she would let her parents stay at her home. But that wasn’t the case for the woman, which didn’t sit well with Reddit users.

In the thread, the pregnant woman began by sharing about her relationship with her retired parents which she described as “great.” However, they live in a beach town while she lives with her fiancé Dan in the place she grew up in. Apparently, the house she currently lives in used to belong to her parents. She bought it from them after they decided to sell it to her below market value which anyone would agree to be an awesome steal.

But they asked one thing from her in exchange for selling the house at a relatively lower price: let them stay in the house whenever they are in town. And so, her parents stayed with them for 3-4 days each time they came over. It went on for two years according to the original poster.

Since she wanted someone to help her out with the house and the baby as well as emotional support, she thought what better way to do it than to have her parents around? She revealed that she asked her parents to come over as she had no support system while her partner has no relationship with his family.  She wrote:

“I was talking to my mom about the birth and I brought up that I would like her to be in town when I give birth and to stay for a few weeks after. Dan has no relationship with his family and I'm an only child, with only a couple of very elderly aunts and a few cousins I don't have much of a relationship with, so we don't really have much in terms of a support system. Therefore, I'd love for my parents to come here and help around the house, with the baby, offer me the emotional support I know I'm going to need, etc."

While the first few parts of her post appeared to be positive considering she wanted to have her parents with her at an important point in her life, as her post went on it began to draw flak. The twist? She didn’t want her parents to stay in their house and have them rent an Airbnb instead, which her parents found ridiculous.

She then went on to share how her mom got offended after she heard her explanation. Her father also chimed in and said it won’t be practical for them to spend thousands of dollars, revealing their town can be in demand during the Christmas season.

“My mom was a little offended, saying that she wasn't going to bother us and she was going to help out, but I told her it was nothing personal, I just preferred if she got a hotel or AirBnB or something. My father then intervened, having been somewhere within earshot, and said that accommodation was going to be really expensive around that time of the year (our town has a very famous, very big Christmas market) and he wasn't about to spend thousands of dollars when I was asking them to come,” she said.

Her parents also pointed out that they had an agreement beforehand, which she thought was fair. She also explained that she really wanted them to come over to their town, she just didn’t want them to stay in their house. She also said she felt disappointed since she felt like her parents were “putting money above me and their grandson.”

While her partner sided with her parents after she told him everything that happened, she insisted that nothing made sense to her since she thinks they really needed some alone time. She ended her post by asking if she was in the wrong.

Reddit users had mixed reactions to her situation, but most of them were really not on her side.

Most_Duck4260, for one, said she wasn’t in the wrong for wanting to have some privacy with her partner but she definitely was for wanting them to stay somewhere else without offering to pay for the bill.

“You’re N T A (Not The A******) for wanting privacy with your husband as you adjust to being parents, but YTA (You’re The A******) for asking your parents to come but stay at a hotel without offering to pay for it. Sadly you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. Wanting support is understandable, but if you want them near but not at your home you need to pay for it. It’s unreasonable to ask them to foot the bill,” Most_Duck4260 wrote.

Another netizen, sarcastic_mzungu, who went through pregnancy with her parents by her side to help her out, seconded Most_Duck4260’s statements about the woman being in the wrong as she would definitely want to have them around.

“As someone who has been through childbirth and had my mom to help me out afterward, let me let you in on a secret. You ABSOLUTELY will want them staying at your house unless your parents are super unreasonable people, which it doesn’t sound like they are,” sarcastic_mzungu said.

“Right? A few weeks will cost them thousands of dollars. That’s insane. OP’s (Original Poster) parents probably sold them that house at a STEAL & now they are “a little sad” saying their parents are putting money before their grandson as if it’s just a couple hundred dollars. OP is definitely the a******,” another user said.
