Woman Asks If She's In The Wrong For 'Getting Annoyed With Friend’s Vegan Boyfriend'

People's diets differ greatly due to many reasons, whether they have allergies or stick to certain foods for religious or moral reasons. One group that often feels the scorn of others due to their dietary requirements is vegans.

Defined as a diet that abstains from any animal products, including products such as dairy or honey from bees, veganism is often seen as fairly extreme. People become vegan for a multitude of reasons that range from fighting for animal rights and protecting the environment to wishing to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

The bad reputation that vegans sometimes get usually revolves around the stigma that some individuals like to shout their veganism from the rooftops, whether it's to improve their social reputation or trying to convince others to become vegan too.

There are also people who only sometimes follow a plant-based diet, such as flexitarians, who tend to eat vegetarian or vegan most of the time but make allowances for animal products occasionally.

Unfortunately for one frustrated woman, she encountered one of these kinds of vegans — but only after she went out of her way to cook an elaborate dinner to accommodate her friend's supposedly vegan boyfriend.

After cooking two roast dinners — one with meat and one completely vegan — the so-called vegan decided to eat a non-vegan dessert and have normal milk in his coffee as a "treat." This infuriated the host who ended up losing it, while the friend's boyfriend laughed it off as not a big deal.

After realizing that her friend is now in an awkward position following the incident, the woman took her story to Reddit's popular "Am I the A**hole" subreddit to see whether she was in the wrong and if so, she was willing to apologize for her behavior.

Posting under the title, "Am I The A**hole For Getting Annoyed With My Friend’s Vegan Boyfriend?," the Reddit user begins by stating that her friend and her friend's boyfriend came over for a Sunday roast dinner, which usually consists of beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy. She wrote about the friend's boyfriend:

"When I invited them for dinner, my friend said he's a vegan and gave me his number. He texted to say please no mixing etc of meats/animal produce."

The host then decided it would be a "fun challenge" to make two roasts — a usual one with meat, so that meat-eaters didn't miss out, and another that accommodated the vegan. She explains:

"I researched the best possible way to make a vegan version that’s still yummy for him. I spent a fortune on the vegan alternatives, didn't mind as I invited them over and was game for a new cooking challenge."

Feeling proud of herself, the woman served the dinners but the boyfriend didn't mention the meal at all and only said "thanks" at the end. She adds:

"I was a little bit miffed he overlooked the work I put into his dinner but whatever."

Then they got to dessert, which included a large crème brûlée for the dairy eaters and a chocolate pudding for him that was vegan. While offering coffees, the woman was surprised, explaining:

"The boyfriend asked for a coffee with regular milk as he fancied 'a treat' … I must have pulled a face, no way that I didn’t and said, 'ok.' I’m p*ssed off at this point, considering the effort I went [to] for respecting his diet requirements. I return with coffees, and he is scoffing my part of the crème brûlée, leaving me with his vegan dessert."

That's when the woman had enough and told him "that wasn't vegan" leading him to reply "eh, doesn’t matter.” At that point she blew up and "pointed out how rude it was of him to ask for his dinner to be 100% vegan, as far as not cooking potatoes in certain things and how [she] went above and beyond trying to make his meal pleasant for him to throw it in [her] face." The boyfriend's reply only made matters worse, as he laughed it off and said, "chill, not that big of a deal."

She says that he thinks she's a huge a**hole and that her friend/his girlfriend is now conflicted and in an awkward position. Wanting to know if she was in the wrong, she says she would apologize if she is in order to clear the air for her friend.

However, people on Reddit overwhelmingly found the woman to be in the right in the scenario and that the supposedly vegan boyfriend was the a**hole. One commenter made a good point, writing:

”So he is only vegan when it benefits him? And if it doesn't he will just eat non vegan food? wtf? He made you do all the work for nothing + he stole your desert."

Over 26,000 people liked that comment, while many others lightheartedly mentioned the stolen dessert too. Someone else who is vegan also gave their input:

"I’m vegan and I would never expect anyone to go out of their way to make me a special vegan dish, not to mention an entire vegan meal. In fact, I usually bring my own food to these types of get-togethers. If someone DID take the time to research, purchase, and prepare this sort of meal for me, I think I would cry in shock and appreciation."
