Woman Adopts Petite Rescue Dog Known for a Striking Feature

When Brooke Landon first visited her friend's house to see a litter of foster puppies, she had absolutely no plans to bring one home. But then she met Sage — and those plans went right out the window. "I went over to my friend's house, and it was love at first sight," Brooke tells PEOPLE. "It was meant to be."

What struck Brooke first wasn't Sage's appearance — it was her personality. While the rest of the litter was jumping and barking for attention, Sage took a completely different approach. "She came over calmly, wagged her tail a couple times, sniffed my hand, and walked away happily," Brooke recalls. For the rest of the visit, Sage spent most of her time napping on Brooke's lap, unbothered and entirely herself.

That quiet confidence made an impression that stuck. Sage is a rescue, saved by Sparks Rescue with just three days to spare before she would have been put down at a Santa Barbara shelter. One of her siblings didn't survive after falling ill, a reality that still shapes how Brooke sees her today. "Thankfully, Sage and her siblings were saved by Sparks Rescue," she says — though the weight of how close it came never really leaves.

As a full-time pet sitter and dog walker, Brooke has made Sage a constant companion. Sage joins her on long walks most days, though she occasionally opts for the comfort of Brooke's bag instead — turning every outing into a little extra workout for her owner. As of April 8, 2026, their bond hasn't lost a single bit of its shine. "She still makes my heart melt daily!" Brooke says.

As Sage grew, one thing became increasingly clear — her ears were not going anywhere. DNA results eventually revealed she is 42% Chihuahua and 10.8% miniature schnauzer, along with a mix of several other breeds. Brooke believes that combination is exactly what's behind Sage's most talked-about feature. Brooke says a lot of people think Sage is part Papillon because of her ears and because she never grew into them.

And those ears have become something of a personality all on their own. Paired with Sage's otherwise petite frame, they catch people off guard every single time. "She is very well behaved but does have selective hearing, which is surprising to some considering the size of her ears lol," Brooke says — a line that pretty much sums up Sage's particular brand of charm.

The moment that brought Sage to the internet's attention was a TikTok Brooke posted showing Sage as a tiny puppy alongside clips of her at nearly 2 years old as of April 8, 2026. The caption said everything:

"Everyone said Sage would grow into her ears. So we waited…and waited…here she is nearly 2 years later ears and all."

The video resonated instantly because anyone who has ever loved a dog that turned out to be nothing like expected knows exactly how that story goes. Sage never did grow into her ears — and at this point, Brooke wouldn't have it any other way.

Brooke tells PEOPLE that as of April 8, 2026, Sage was nearly 2 and still made her heart melt daily. Some things, it turns out, you never grow out of. And for Sage, that's the whole point.
