The nation has been captivated by the story of missing teen Jayme Closs. The 13-year old girl went missing on October 15, 2018, in the small town of Barron, Wisconsin. The police were alerted to Jayme’s disappearance through a 911 call made from the cell phone of her mother Denise.

Tragically, when police arrived, they found Denise and her husband James dead, but Jayme was nowhere to be found. While many feared for the young girl’s fate, police suspected that she was kidnapped by whoever murdered Jayme’s parents.

A massive search followed, with hundreds of volunteers combing through the woods and fields around Barron. As the community continued to look for Jayme, police left no stone unturned, receiving thousands of tips.

Despite no evidence of her whereabouts, Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald never gave up hope, promising the family he would bring the teen back alive.

Thankfully, Jayme’s story had a happy ending. On January 11, Jayme was found in Gordon, Wisconsin, a town an hour away from her home. Approaching Jeanne Nutter as she walked her dog, the emaciated and disheveled girl asked for help, telling Jeane that was Jayme Closs and that she had just escaped her kidnapper. Scared that the kidnapper might be looking for her, Jeane brought Jayme to a nearby house, where they awaited the police.

Law enforcement responded in short order, bringing Jayme to the hospital for a medical evaluation. The police were also able to arrest Jayme’s kidnapper, 21-year old Jake Thomas Patterson, without incident. Patterson later confessed to his crimes, saying that he first spotted the young girl at a bus stop.

Despite her ordeal, Jayme has been shown to be a strong and resilient young woman. Jennifer Naiberg Smith, Jayme’s aunt, recently showed a picture of her niece on Facebook. Jayme is all smiling in the photo, cuddling with her dog as she gets back to living her life. Jennifer says that Jayme still has much healing to do but that they will get through it together as a family.

Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald was even more positive about the outcome of the case. While thanking all the agencies and police departments that assisted in the search, Sheriff Fitzgerald thanked Jayme above all, saying that she was the real hero of the case.
