People with more dominant personalities have been picking on weaker individuals for countless years in various ways. Technology has changed many aspects of our lives, and this includes the interaction between a victim and a bully. Various online platforms now enable bullies to target and persecute victims at all hours of the day and in many cases, also in a very public way.

While bullying has evolved, it seems that the impact on the victims has also become more significant. A few unkind words on a school playground can be devastating, but online bullying can be seemingly endless. In some cases, it seems as if dozens of people are out to get the victim. This persecution does more than impact self-confidence and causes emotional stress. In some cases, it leads to depression, self-harm and even suicide attempts.

The effects of bullying are increasingly receiving attention. People are questioning if parents and school officials are doing enough to stop the problem. Some people wonder if anti-bullying laws in place are sufficient to address the problem effectively.

While each community has its own way of dealing with bullying, one Wisconsin town has taken a new approach to reduce the prevalence of this problem. Shawano’s city council recently passed a new anti-bullying ordinance. It enables the city’s police department to fine parents on even the first bullying incident. One of the intents behind this ordinance is to encourage parents to oversee their children’s online activities more carefully and even to limit or prohibit the use of some social media platforms.
