Since the late 1980s, Winona Ryder has been a pivotal figure in the entertainment industry. She is known for her expressive face and distinctive vocal tone when it comes to delivering her lines as an actress, and she has portrayed a wide variety of characters, from those on the more weird and quirky side to those on the more serious and stoic side.
Ryder was born as Winona Laura Horowitz on Oct. 29, 1971, in Winona, Minnesota. When she was ten years old, Ryder and her family moved to Petaluma, California, where her classmates incessantly bullied her. Ryder endured several hardships during her childhood all the way through the end of her high school career. Despite the fact that she had started acting during this time, people still ridiculed her.
However, Ryder has proven to come out on top time and again. In her career, she has been honored with several awards and accolades. She has also continued to find success in mainstream projects both in film and television. Some of her most prominent works include “Beetlejuice,” “Heathers,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and “Girl, Interrupted.” Ryder is currently on the highly popular science fiction series “Stranger Things.”
As someone who has been in the spotlight for so long, it’s not surprising that Ryder has dated a few celebrities, including Johnny Depp, who even got a tattoo of her name. Nowadays, the star is opening up more about her past hardships, her current relationship and her personal mental health struggles. Read on to find out more about Ryder’s life and career.

Ryder is clearly a force to be reckoned with when it comes to finding success in Hollywood. The accomplished actress has portrayed a litany of characters in films and television, proving that she has a very impressive range.
According to The Guardian, Ryder became a star when she was just a teenager, thanks to her early roles in cult films such as “Beetlejuice” and “Heathers.” Ryder went on to find even more success as the years went by, but not before she took a brief hiatus following a troubling incident.
She had been arrested for shoplifting in Beverly Hills in 2001. She was sentenced to 500 hours of community service and essentially hid away from the spotlight of Los Angeles to move to her childhood home in San Francisco, according to The Guardian. “I’m San Franciscian to the bone,” she said.
Aside from a guest appearance on “Friends” and a small cameo in the comedy “Zoolander,” Ryder’s career during the early 2000s was not very substantial. In fact, the actress went on a hiatus from 2001 to 2005 following her shoplifting incident. However, the films “Mr. Deeds” and “Simone” were released in 2002, having been filmed prior to Ryder’s hiatus.
In 2006, Ryder embarked on a career revival. While her work during this time may not have always been huge blockbuster hits, it was the perfect way for Ryder to get back in the game. She appeared in several independent films, as well as a handful of critically acclaimed projects, such as J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.” She also reunited with Tim Burton – whom she worked with on “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands” – for “Frankenweenie” in 2012.

During her time in the spotlight, Ryder has also engaged in a few relationships. She first met Depp in June 1989, and the two began dating shortly after. In July 1990, they became engaged but broke up in 1993. However, Depp had gotten a tattoo of Ryder’s name during this time that said “Winona Forever,” although he later changed it to say “Wino Forever.”
Ryder went on to date Soul Asylum band member Dave Pirner from 1993 to 1996. Later, she engaged in a 2-year relationship with actor Matt Damon. Nowadays, Ryder is in a very loving and long-term relationship with her partner Scott Mackinlay Hahn, whom she has been with since 2011.
It’s safe to say that Ryder’s revival was a knockout, and to this day, she is recognized once again as one of the leading women in Hollywood. Since 2016, she has starred as the character Joyce Byers in the science fiction horror series “Stranger Things,” earning several award nominations in the process.
Nowadays, the actress is continuing to speak her mind more than ever. According to TODAY, the world was not on her side when she was “vulnerable” and opened up about her depression in the 1990s, but now more people are working to break the mental health stigma.
Ryder explained:
“I don’t regret opening up about what I went through (with depression) because, it sounds really cliche, but I have had women come up to me and say, ‘It meant so much to me.’”
This was part of what inspired her to make the 1999 film “Girl, Interrupted,” which was set inside a women’s mental hospital. Ryder added, “And I am super sensitive, and I don’t think that that’s a bad thing. To do what I do, I have to remain open.”
