William Shatner and Daughter Reveal They Battled Stage 4 Cancer at The Same Time

Few experiences can reshape a family more profoundly than a life-threatening illness. For William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, that reality arrived twice.

The pair recently revealed in an interview with PEOPLE that they were battling separate Stage 4 cancers within roughly a year of each other, a chapter they largely kept private while focusing on treatment and recovery. Today, both are cancer-free, but they say the experience permanently changed the way they value time, family and the future.

Melanie's journey began in 2022 after she discovered a lump in her breast. Doctors diagnosed her with Stage 4 breast cancer, leading to more than a year of chemotherapy with HER2-targeted therapies, a double mastectomy and 30 radiation treatments. While she was working toward recovery, William noticed what appeared to be a small lump on his cheek. Tests later confirmed Stage 4 melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain.

The actor underwent surgery to remove the tumor before beginning two years of immunotherapy. Although father and daughter were receiving different treatments, they often found themselves encouraging one another through the uncertainty that comes with serious illness.

For Melanie, however, the emotional burden extended beyond her own diagnosis.

"I remember vividly thinking, 'I don't have the strength to take care of myself and lose my father at the same time,'" she told PEOPLE.

Looking back, both say surviving cancer wasn't simply about overcoming disease. It also reminded them how much strength can come from leaning on family when life becomes most uncertain.

William credits both their loved ones and their medical teams for helping them reach recovery.

"We got the perfect doctors for her cancer and my cancer," he told PEOPLE.

Melanie said her father rarely let his diagnosis slow him down. Whenever he was home, she and her husband, Joel Gretsch, brought dinner, watched movies together and made sure he never felt alone. William also eased one of her biggest worries by telling her, "I do not want you to worry. Just send me the bills," before later joking, "You've got to get well. We're going to be in the poorhouse!"

Rather than leaving those experiences behind, the father and daughter are now using them as the foundation for a new podcast, "No Time but Now." The series will feature conversations with physicians, health experts and fellow cancer survivors about resilience, perspective and making the most of the time people are given.

Explaining why those conversations matter, William told PEOPLE, "It's easy for us... to say, 'Make your life meaningful.' ... But it's also possible to endure that and be aware of the beauty around you."

Melanie says surviving cancer changed her outlook in ways she never expected.

"[Overcoming cancer] changed my life. I'm not so afraid anymore, and there's so much freedom and joy," she said.

William has also become more reflective about mortality. Speaking with TV Insider, he admitted he's "always asking questions" because he fears leaving life with unanswered ones, adding with characteristic humor that his curiosity has only grown with age.

That perspective carries into his life today. In a separate interview with Hello! magazine, William said his greatest motivation is no longer tied to his career, but to the people waiting for him at home.

"I want to stay healthy and functioning, and I'd like to pass away in my sleep because... I have people I love, my family, my dogs."
