Wife Plants A Glitter Bomb To Stop Mother-In-Law From Snooping In Her Bedroom

Dealing with in-laws can be tricky at times. It’s important to set boundaries, but it can be hard to do so without feeling like you’re completely overstepping with your partner’s parents. Still, it’s a good idea to talk to your partner and enforce specific guidelines when family members or other guests come visit.

One wife was extremely frustrated with her husband for not setting clear boundaries with his mother whenever she came over to visit. The mother-in-law seemed to always forget where the bathroom on the first floor was, and would use that as an excuse to go upstairs toward where the bedrooms are. The wife even caught her looking through some items left on her bedroom dresser one day, and knew that she needed to do something about her mother-in-law’s persistent snooping.

The wife wanted to make sure that her mother-in-law wouldn’t look through any of her or her husband’s belongings anymore. She decided to put some glitter on the doorknobs to the rooms the mother-in-law had no business going in. Taking it one step further, the wife also set up a stealthy glitter bomb in another room.

It turned out that the mother-in-law did in fact find the glitter bomb, as she was compeltely covered in the sparkly substance after yet another round of snooping. Since then, the husband’s family has been divided on whether the wife overstepped or if the mother-in-law was wrong for constantly snooping around. The wife went to Reddit in December 2021 to ask users for their advice on moving forward from such a frustrating situation.

Setting The Trap

Starting off her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) said, “For some weird reason my mother-in-law really wants to go into our bedroom whenever she comes over.” OP said she followed her upstairs one day to get something, and noticed her mother-in-law shuffling through bills on the bedroom dresser. “She denied snooping (even though I’d just watched her do it) and said she was just going to use our bathroom because she couldn’t find the other ones,” OP said.

Afterward, OP decided to install door knobs that require a key to open the door on both her bedroom door and the office door. OP continued, “However, she’s still always ‘forgetting’ where the bathroom is and trying the bedroom and office door.” Even though it was clearly an issue for OP, her husband figured that she found everything his mother did annoying, and didn’t pay it much attention.

Over the holidays, OP’s in-laws came over for dinner, so she wanted to make sure she had the keys to lock the bedroom and office doors, but couldn’t find them. Her husband said that it was fine, but OP insisted that her mother-in-law would snoop.

“We went back and forth and decided to cover the door knobs in super fine glitter to see if she tried them,” OP said. “I did this once before when husband didn’t believe me about the snooping to prove she’d been in the rooms.” The plan backfired last time, so OP took this plan one step further, and essentially installed a glitter bomb in the office that would leave someone covered in glitter if they set it off.

Planning To Move Forward

When the in-laws arrived, the husband explicitly said to not go upstairs and showed everyone the bathroom on the main floor, but one person clearly didn’t seem to listen. OP explained, “Well guess who had to go to the bathroom and got covered in glitter and had it all over their hands and hair? She completely lost it and started screaming at me so I yelled back and now my husband is saying I went too far and I’m the a******.”

The family was divided on who was right and who was wrong, so OP asked Redditors for their thoughts. One user commented, “Your MIL is an issue but the fact your husband refuses to set and enforce boundaries with her is actually the larger issue here.”

Another added, “Why is your husband OK with his mother walking all over your boundaries. Also, the getting caught with glitter on her hands is HILARIOUS, but it’s going to be hard to clean up for you.” A third user said, “I had a good laugh at this. I feel like you did a good job leading up to this and were incredibly patient with a boundary-stomping MIL.”

OP has since edited her post to explain that the comments were very eye-opening for her husband, and that they are starting couple’s therapy in January 2022. As for her mother-in-law, she said, “And if she comes over again I will set up a camera haha or at least print out some fun fake documents so if she snoops again she can at least find something interesting.”
