According to a report from CNN News, prior to meeting online and then falling in love, Dan found out that he had a kidney condition that would likely necessitate that he receive a transplant at some point in his life. However, Dan thought he would not need the new kidney until years down the road.

Unfortunately, his health took a turn for the worse, requiring that he look into getting a kidney transplant as soon as possible.

As it turned out, Lisa was the perfect match. Doctors said as per CNN that the odds of that match are one in 100,000.

On August 22, Dan received a new lease on life when his wife, Lisa, gave him one of her kidneys. The operation took place at UCSF Medical Center near the couple's home in Auburn, California. The transplant was a success as Dan's body accepted Lisa's kidney.

The couple has found a new appreciation for life as a result of what they have gone through together. Dan says that simply holding the hand of their son, Jasper, has taken on new meaning. The Summers family is now strong advocates for kidney donation.

Dan said to CNN that because of a shortage of donors, many needy patients are having to undergo dialysis to keep them alive. A live donor kidney can provide up to 30 years or more of good health if it is a good match.
