Wife Cancels 5-Day Christmas Celebration Her Husband Scheduled Without Telling Her

Dec 21, 2021 by apost team

During the holiday season, it’s pretty common for families to get together and spend quality time with each other. This sometimes means seeing extended family that we don’t normally get to see during the rest of the year, making this time even more special and meaningful. However, there are some stresses that come with the holiday season, especially if you are the one hosting the celebration at your house.

A woman went to Reddit on Dec. 2, 2021, to talk about an issue she was having with her husband and to ask Reddit users for their advice on the matter. The original poster (OP) talked about her family dynamic, as she works full time while her husband only works three nights a week. On top of that, they have a 2-year-old together, and OP was six months pregnant. Balancing taking care of their child along with working and keeping up with the housework, it’s safe to say that OP was feeling a little overwhelmed.

Unbeknownst to OP, her husband decided to invite 26 of his family members to their place for a five day Christmas extravaganza. He didn’t even ask her ahead of time, and told her to get used to it since he was the head of the family following his father’s death the year prior. OP was completely unprepared to host her husband’s family for so long on top of all of her other responsibilities, so she decided to cancel the celebration. Since then, she and her husband have been arguing, resulting in OP wondering if she handled the situation the right way.

Starting off her Reddit post, OP said that she and her husband have been married for four years. They have a 2-year-old and are currently expecting their second child. As the holiday season approached, the family started to have some drama. OP explained, “My husband has a large family. And on every Christmas they’d gather at his father’s house.”

Her father-in-law passed away the year before, leaving her husband as the head of the family, so he decided to host Christmas at their house this year. “Unbeknownst to me, he sent out invitations for a five day Christmas celebration to his entire family which are about 26 members in total,” OP said.

When OP found out, she was shocked. “I confronted him on it and he said I shouldn’t be surprised and just get used to it because after his father’s death he’s now the family’s ‘head’ and all major family events will be held in our house and in his presence,” OP said. “I freaked out and said no this is wrong and he should’ve talked to me first before sending out any invitations to his family knowing I have other commitments like work and taking care of the house and our son.”

Her husband told her to just take time off of work, but that would interfere with her maternity later down the road. “I demanded he cancel the invitations but he refused saying ‘over my dead body’ then walked out,” OP explained. “I ended up sending a mass text to everyone who received an invitation explaining that we will not be hosting Christmas this year.”

OP continued, “He found out and went off on me calling my behavior outrageously appalling and said that I broke his word to his family and made him look small and with no authority.” However, OP stood by her convictions and said that she wouldn’t be hosting Christmas while working and pregnant. Her husband later asked for a hand-written apology for cancelling the celebration and for undermining his authority. His family also told OP that she was being disrespectful.

However, Reddit users were on OP’s side and said she was right to call out her husband for his behavior and inviting so many people to their house without her knowledge. One user said, “Undermining his… what?? I’m curious where he thinks he gets this perceived authority from. Don’t be a doormat, OP.” Another user said, “The fact to saying she made him ‘feel small’ and with ‘no authority’ shines a light on how he sees their relationship dynamic.”

A third user commented, “You’re the one doing everything, if anything, you’re the man of the family now. You work, take care of the kids, run the house, you’re the one who has the authority. Not him. And he comes from a family who thinks the same stupid stuff.”

Another user had similar ideas, and said, “OP is working full time, raising a toddler and pregnant. And husband expects her to entertain a houseful of people for five days with no help? Yeah, no. Not telling her about it first is already bad but everything else on top of that makes it even worse. OP, stand firm.”
