Widower Struggles From Loss Of His Wife & 3-Year-Old Son Fighting Leukemia. Coworkers Clock 3300 Overtime Hours To Help

Andreas Graf lost his wife to heart disease just weeks after his son's leukemia diagnosis. Coworkers donated a year’s worth of overtime hours so that he could stay beside his son.

When doctors diagnosed 3-year-old Julius Graf with leukemia, his father, Andreas, dropped everything, checking into the hospital alongside his son and staying for the entire nine-week treatment. But before Andreas could take Julius back home, tragedy struck again when Andreas’ wife fell suddenly ill and died of heart disease.

Reeling in the aftermath, Andreas cashed in all of his annual work leave, allowing him to stay beside his son as they worked through the tragedies. The time off wasn’t adequate to grieve his wife’s death, especially so soon after his son’s diagnosis. And so he returned to work without a proper chance to heal.

Soon, he began to fear being fired.

Then, Pia Meier, the HR Manager for the company that Andreas worked for, stepped in. She sent out a message to his coworkers, looking for anyone willing to donate their overtime hours to him so that he could stay home with his son and both could properly mend. An incredible 650 employees answered the call, many of whom had never met Andreas. They donated 3264.5 hours, in total. The company allowed Andreas to take the hours as paid leave, giving him over a year off work to heal and raise his son.
