Kris and Paul Scharoun-DeForge married in 1993, becoming one of the first couples in the world with Down’s syndrome to get hitched. However after nearly 26 years together Paul has sadly passed away leaving Kris widowed. She is now opening up about the incredible bond she shared with her late husband.

Kris and Paul dated for five years before Kris popped the question.

"I proposed to him," Kris said to CBS News. "I whispered in his ear, 'Would you marry me?' And he looked up at me with this big beautiful smile and he shook his head 'Yes!' And that's when I knew."

However, Kris and Paul’s union did not come without its backlash. Kris’ sister Susan Scharoun told CBS that Kris and Paul had to attend classes on marriage, and counseling to make sure they were ready for this major life decision.

"Yea, there really was quite a bit of resistance. There was a feeling that it was like children getting married versus two very capable adults," Susan said.

Paul sadly passed away at the age of 56 in April of this year after his battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Kris told CBS how important it is for couples like her and Paul to be given the same opportunities to find love.

"People like us need to have a chance," Kris said. "A chance to find the man of your dreams, like I did." When asked if she would ever heal from her loss Kris replied, "I just lost the man that I love, but I'm going to try."
