Why It's Important to NEVER Wash Your Dishes Before Loading Them In the Dishwasher

You will never have to force your family to wash the dishes before loading them in the dishwasher again. That's because they shouldn't be pre-washed, according to experts.

That may not make a lot of sense to those who see the dishwasher as a sanitizer, but experts say washing dishes first actually leaves them less clean.

Wall Street Journal report states today's dish washers are smart devices and have sensors deciding the machine's temperature and cycle length. It makes decisions by analyzing how much food is coming off of dishes during the pre-wash cycle.

Dishes already cleaned will prompt a different setting and temperature than dirty dishes. This is true even if you constantly use the same setting.

Your dishes may still be clean when they come out, but the problem is when a few aren't pre-washed as well as others. So the glass casserole dish you quickly rinsed in order to watch your favorite television show may come out sticky.

It may be true that machines of past eras needed extra help with you pre-washing, but Consumer Reports states stress tests on modern appliances prove they can handle dishes with moderate food residue.

Besides, forgoing pre-washing frees up your time and saves water. The extra task amounts to around 20 gallons pf additional water used for every dishwasher load.

Even with today's smart washers, dishes still need to be scraped of large food items. It is also important to regularly clean the filter.

Cleaning your dishwasher is a breeze. It should be done monthly because it can accumulate soap scum and can produce germs. Clean the drain under the dish rack by hand first. Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom and rinse.

You can get rid of foul odors by running your washer on a warm cycle with a cup of vinegar placed on the top rack. You can put in Kool-Aid powder - yes the drink - to run in an empty machine for a fruity smell.

Your dishwasher can do more than clean dinnerware. Anything that is dishwasher safe can be cleaned in it. Plastic children's toys, dog toys, small wastebaskets, gardening tools and even plastic flip flops will come out germ-free.

Just be sure to run them on a cold cycle rather than heated drying.
