Why Ali Larter Left Hollywood Behind for a Slower Life in Idaho

For years, Los Angeles was home to Ali Larter. As an actress whose career included hit films, television roles and, most recently, Paramount+'s "Landman," the city naturally came with auditions, premieres, industry events and the constant pace of Hollywood. But these days, Larter's picture of a perfect summer looks nothing like a studio backlot or a red carpet.

Instead, her family spends the season outdoors in Sun Valley, Idaho, where simple routines have replaced packed schedules. Speaking during the Newport Beach TV Fest, Larter described days filled with bike rides, backyard barbecues, afternoons with the family's dogs and refreshing cold plunges in the nearby river. Her daughter enjoys volleyball, while family outings often include stopping at a favorite local spot, Leroy's, for an ice cream cone. Even the extended daylight has become part of the appeal, with summer evenings stretching until nearly 10 p.m.

Larter and her husband, actor Hayes MacArthur, are raising their two children, Teddy and Vivienne, in that quieter environment. While the family still balances careers with parenting, their daily rhythm now revolves less around Hollywood obligations and more around making time for one another.

The move wasn't originally part of a long-term plan. Like many families during the COVID-19 pandemic, they temporarily relocated, expecting life to return to normal within a matter of months. What they discovered instead was a community and a lifestyle that gradually changed how they imagined their future.

By the time they returned to California, they realized they weren't quite the same family that had left.

Larter has said the turning point came when everyday life in Idaho began offering something she and her husband hadn't realized they were missing. Their daughter was able to attend kindergarten in person while many California schools remained closed, giving the family an unexpected sense of normalcy during an uncertain period. They met neighbors through school, spent weekends skiing together and found themselves building friendships that extended far beyond work.

Returning to Los Angeles later that year only sharpened the contrast. The demands of the entertainment industry quickly returned, bringing auditions, professional appearances, charity events and the constant expectation of being available. Although Larter has spoken fondly of Los Angeles and says it will always hold a special place in her heart, she and MacArthur ultimately realized the lifestyle no longer reflected what they wanted most.

"We just didn't want to do that," she explained to Fox News Digital as she reflected on the decision. "We wanna be with our children."

Rather than treating Idaho as a temporary escape, the family decided to embrace it as home.

"We just made a go for it and said, 'Let's try this and see if it works,'" Larter recalled.

Years later, she believes they made the right choice. Looking back on long summer evenings, family bike rides, spontaneous trips for ice cream and uninterrupted time together, Larter says the biggest reward wasn't leaving Hollywood—it was discovering a different pace of life.

"It's just kind of simpler," she said. "The days are really long. The sun's out till like 10 at night now, so it's been really beautiful to kind of have the kids out of school and enjoy the time with them."
