Parents try to keep a watchful eye on their kids, but doing so isn't always easy. When an adult takes a child to a restaurant, retail store, or professional service's office, distractions can easily happen. Mom or dad are momentarily distracted and lose sight of their little ones for a brief time.

Unfortunately, it sometimes doesn't take long for a small child to get in trouble. And sometimes, that trouble comes with a massive cost.

Recently, a mom took her five-year-old son Troy with her to a friend's wedding in a city in Kansas. For the entire ceremony, Troy remained quiet and well behaved.

When the festivities were over, Amanda, the mom, took Troy by the hand and the two of them went to the reception. Amanda left little Troy by himself for a few seconds as she said goodbye to the bride and groom. Troy wandered to the hall's entrance where a beautiful glass sculpture caught his attention.

He touched the statue and inadvertently knocked it over.

Glass doesn't handle impact well, as we all know. The sculpture shattered into a thousand pieces after it had fallen to the ground.

Amanda heard the loud noise and rushed to the scene. Worry overtook her as she feared Troy was hurt. Thankfully, the child had suffered no harm apart from a few minor scrapes.

But then another real problem arose: the artwork's owners walked up and demanded that Amanda paid for the loss. And the damage is in the six-figure range.

The glass sculpture had a value of more than $130,000. The reception hall's insurance company won't pay the claim since it was clearly Troy who caused the damage reports 41 Action News.

Troy's mom claims the sculpture wasn't adequately protected. She may have a point when she asks why such a valuable piece of art wasn't placed inside a barricade or housed inside protective plexiglass.

Then again, how does a popular saying go? If you break it, you buy it. Parents are responsible for their children's actions. This incident is a reminder that you should try to never lose sight of what your little one is doing.

Your friends and family might benefit from the lessons this case of the shattered sculpture teaches us. Bring the story to their attention. This way, they will hopefully remain vigilant when taking their kids to a place where valuable property is to be found.
