When They Saw How Big Their Classmates' Student Lunch Debt Was, These Young Sisters Made A Lemonade Stand To Raise Over $4,000

There's a growing problem that is affecting young students in the United States: school lunch debt. Students get their lunches each day and the amount they owe accumulates. Some low-income families can't afford to pay the thousands of dollars that accrue.

Some schools give students with lunch debt offerings like sandwiches. Student meal debt is an issue that keeps popping up across the US. According to CNN, "one high school attempted to prevent students from attending the graduation ceremony if they had lunch debt."

Because having a nutritious lunch is so important, a number of people have stepped forward to help. The CEO of Chobani the yogurt company paid nearly $50,000 to get rid of the lunch debts for students in one Rhode Island district. Other parents around the country have paid off lunch debts for struggling students in their own districts.

Now, the movement has gone beyond parents. In North Carolina, two young girls have stepped up. Hailey and Hannah Hager wanted to help the growing lunch debt at their school. Hanna was inspired by a friend who can't afford to eat school lunches. That rightly upset the 11-year-old girl.

The Hagers came up with an idea. They would create a lemonade stand to help pay off the $40,000 in lunch debts in their school district. They named their stand Hailey and Hannah's Helping Hands.

So far, the girls have raised $4,500 and they don't plan on stopping anytime soon. They continue to raise money from local churches and individuals who want to help. They've also started raising money through social media.
