Burke admits that shopping with a child who has special needs can be very difficult sometimes. He also states that his son has been blessed with an strong independence. During their visit to the Tesco, Jay became a little obsessed with the checkout process.

He decided to go to one of the lanes that was closed and pretend to check out items himself. Burke tried to get Jay back over to the lane where their groceries were at. But, Jay wasn't budging. He had decided that this was his new "job".

The store manager, James, noticed what was going on. He knew he had to do something to help. He went over to Jay's lane and opened the register to be able to really scan the groceries. He called Burke over. James allowed Jay to scan all the groceries from his father's order.

A lot of people would have likely just looked away when the situation arose or they could have been worried that Jay was going to cause damage to their equipment. James simply wasn't afraid. He wanted Jay to feel important and allow him to do his new "job".

Burke is very grateful to James. He states that they will never forget him. He said that day Jay truly felt like he was a worker, like he belonged there. It lifted his spirits. Burke states that it warmed his heart to see how he was enjoying doing something so simple.

Burke explained that having someone else encouraging and reassuring your child takes the pressure off some and you don't feel judged as a parent. He says he occasionally encounters people that are very critical with him and it's a difficult thing to deal with. These two will never forget their grocery trip that day!
