When Man Dumps Pregnant Dog At Coffee Shop With Note On Collar, Neighbors Get Together

A Dunkin Donuts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was the setting for a heartbreaking scene recently. A man whose face can clearly be seen on store security cameras stopped inside for a quick cup of coffee. The man was unknown to the regular customers inside.

The man pulled up to the Dunkin Donuts but while he was in the car, he was not alone. Before going inside for his cup of coffee, the man opened the door so that a female dog, clearly confused, could step from the vehicle.

The man went inside the coffee shop and paid no more attention to the dog.

The surveillance footage recorded the man abandoning the dog. A note could also be seen attached to the collar that was around the dog's neck.

Animal services for the city of Santa Fe received a call alerting them to the distress of an animal outside the Dunkin Donuts a day after Christmas 2017. The caller informed them of a man who had parked a Chevy van outside the coffee shop and abandoned a dog there. The security footage would later confirm the caller's version of events.

The caller said the dog had been wandering around outside the donut store in a bewildered state and received no help from the man that brought her there.

The man ordered a cup of coffee inside the store. The dog tried to follow the man inside but had the door closed in her face.

The handwritten note that was placed inside the dog's collar was two lines long. The first line says 'I'm Free.' The second line read 'I'm having babies.'

It is not uncommon for a dog or other animal to be abandoned on the side of the road or dumped at some other place and left to their own devices. Even sadder is the fact that, according to the ASPCA, over 1.5 million dogs and cats are put to sleep each year when there are not enough shelters or adoptive homes to satisfy the need for them.

Fortunately for the dog in this story, she was adopted from the shelter and is doing well currently.

According to the police's update, the man who abandoned her has now come forward. He had to pay a penalty for animal neglect, in addition to a surrender fee to the animal shelter where the dog was being cared for.
