It’s not often you come across a solid Hollywood couple with decades of staying power in their relationship and their acting careers. That happens to be the case for “The Truman Show” star Ed Harris and his wife of 35 years, actress Amy Madigan, known for “Field of Dreams.”

Ed and Amy were wed in 1983 and have been partners and co-stars on a number of projects ever since. They also have a daughter, Lily Dolores Harris, who was born ten years after they got married, according to Lifetime.

Ed spoke about the moment that he met his future wife, while in rehearsal in 1981.

“There was a big semi-circle of seats, there was an empty chair next to me. She was late and I've never seen this woman before,” He told TODAY. “She walked around everybody and sat down next to me. She had really colorful socks on and my line to her was 'I like your socks.'”

Who would have thought that a simple line about colorful socks would set the pair off on a journey that has lasted for years?

The relationship blossomed as the two dated and worked together. They starred in several stage plays and movies opposite one another such as 1985’s “Alamo Bay,” 2000’s “Pollock,” and 1984’s “Places in the Heart.” Among all of the acting, working, and rehearsing, Ed knew the moment he realized they were soulmates:

“Marriage became inevitable when she critiqued my performance in ‘Fool for Love’ and I found myself listening without getting defensive,” he told LIFE in a 1985 issue.

In the same interview, Amy explained the mechanics of how acting with your husband works:

"Acting is largely a matter of trust," she said to LIFE. "With Ed, because I know him, love him and trust him, I don't have to worry about a lot of nonsense. I know he'll be two hundred percent there." In an incredibly sweet response, Ed says, "You know I'll take care of you."
