Neil Diamond made it a point to go home in 2014. The occasion was his then-new album, Melody Road. And while he was in Brooklyn, he visited his alma mater, Erasmus Hall. This was the place where he'd written his first-ever song. And looking around, he was flooded by memories. Yes, people grow and change. But being back at Erasmus Hall High School reminded him of who he was, who he became, and who he'd always been.

The journey back allowed Diamond to see how far he'd come with what he perceived as limited tools. Yes, even Neil Diamond is hard on himself for using the same chords. But he also has the sense to respect the talent he's been given, and the people who encouraged him during his rise to fame. He's long been a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and even the Songwriters Hall of Fame. But in some ways, going back to high school after 50 years meant more to him.
