Watch What Happens When A Woman Gets Interrupted During An Interview On BBC

Life is full of interruptions, and no one understands this more than Robert Kelly, a South Korea expert whose BBC interview went viral in 2017.

While discussing critical issues with BBC, Kelly’s young daughter busted through the door, immediately followed by her infant sibling in a walker. Of course, Kelly’s wife immediately rushes in to remove the hilarious interruption. Although, by this point, history had been made and the children had made their appearance.

Even more, Robert Kelly’s interview received much more notice than it would have otherwise.

Yet, this little interruption had people wondering, what would this interview look like if a working mother had been interrupted by her children? Would it still be perceived with as much light-hearted humor? Does society expect more from mothers as they work to achieve that seemingly-out-of-reach work-life balance?

When a dad takes time out of his day to care for his children, he’s applauded. He lauded as a great father. Society praises him. When a mother does the same, nothing is said. She is only doing what she should. Of course, however, she should also be able to prevent her life and her children from interfering with her work.

For many working mothers this is an impossible feat. Thus, Jono and Ben, a New Zealand YouTube show, used satire to examine these very questions.

In their video, a woman manages to answer all questions in her interview with a straight face, all while dealing with what women deal with on a daily basis.

First, her child barrages in. Does she get flustered by this interruption? Of course not! She simply gives the child a bottle. She can feed and educate her BBC audience at the same time. Yet, a woman’s work does not end at the care of children. She must also roast a chicken for dinner, clean her toilet, steam her shirt, and defuse a bomb. All in a day’s work.

However, we also must not forget how she must also help her husband find his lost sock. Without her, how would he be able to locate his own belongings?

While this is a satire and may seem to be to some an unfunny-exaggeration, many found a connection with our woman getting interrupted. In fact, in just 24 hours this video hit more than a million views! Since then, it has hit more than 21 million views.

Clearly, women find this video very relevant, with one woman saying, “As a politician with 3 young kids, this really is my life. Except I was breastfeeding my baby during meetings. And I never iron/steam anything.”

As women and parents, we do what we have to. As a society, maybe we should pause and consider just how much we expect from working moms. What do you think about this topic? Pass this article on to your friends and loved ones, as well.
