Man and Bird

One day, a Slovenian man who lived in the community of Novo Mesto decided to gather mushrooms in the woods. He did not expect his journey would lead him to a badly injured Ural Owl. The owl perched in a tree low to the ground. Instead of fleeing as he approached, the bird remained motionless. He said, 'A week ago, when I was picking mushrooms in Slovenian woods, I saw a large owl sitting on a dead tree. She wasn't scared of me, so I come closer and I started to cuddle her.'

The man walked up to the bird and stroked the feathers on the top of the bird's head for several minutes. Instead of fleeing from him, or attacking him, the owl remained in the same position.

The man apparently realized the Ural Owl has sustained some type of serious injury. He chose not to leave the helpless creature alone in the woods. He took her to a veterinarian for treatment.

The veterinarian told him the bird had suffered not one, but two broken wings. Had he left the bird in the woods, the injured owl would almost certainly have perished.

Veterinarians performed surgery to repair the Ural Owl's broken bones. After allowing the patient to undergo a lengthy period of recovery, in four months they reportedly plan to release the owl back into a natural setting again.

The man who rescued the owl now urges everyone to show respect for these large birds. These beautiful raptors play an integral role in the natural world. Ural Owls contribute to the health of Slovenian forests. This happy story inspires a global audience today!
