The pastel music video features Katy at a mysterious retro Esalen-style recovery retreat to get over her broken heart. She explores several new therapies to help her forget and continue on, among dancing flower children wearing psychedelic patterns.

She finally reaches enlightenment and leaves the cult-like institute, but then the video ends with her chasing down who you think might be her ex-beau, proving the relationship was “never really over.”

The video was shot near Malibu and directed by Philippa Price who previously did St. Vincent’s “Pills” and Pharell’s “Lost Queen” videos. The setting and style may have been inspired by the song’s verse in which Perry sings, “I guess I could try a new therapy / I’ve got to rewire this brain / I can’t even go on the internet / Without even checking your name.” Katy talked about the song in a press statement released to Billboard where she explains the song:

“All of our relationships — from first love, through failed love, to great love — all become a part of you,” she says, “so that none are ever really over, and once you accept both the dark and the light, you may find that the darkness brought you to the light.”

The song is produced by Zedd, who collaborated with Katy on the song “365,” and Dreamlab. Dan Haywood, Leah Haywood, Dagny, Gino Barletta, Michelle Buzz, Jason Gill, Hayley Warner are credited as co-writers along with Katy.

It’s not clear on if the song will be a taster for an upcoming album, which would be a follow-up to “Witness” from 2017.
