When an officer retires or passes away, the department often issues a final call.

This is a moving time in the life of the officer and for the other members of the department as they have to say goodbye to someone who has worked hard to save the lives of others.

When a K9 officer became ill with cancer and entered a clinic to battle with the disease, the department issued a heartbreaking last call for him that has touched hundreds across the internet.

If you've ever had pets, then you know that they can comfort you when nothing else will and that they will give you unconditional love, even when you're scolding them for doing something wrong. When something happens to those pets, it's sometimes worse than dealing with a person who is ill or who has passed away because you become so close to the animal.

There are times when you must make the decision to stop the pain and suffering that the pet is living in and provide a comfortable end of life for that pet. Timo spent many years helping the Indianapolis Police Department. His partner, Officer Hartman, spent 10 years with the Dutch shepherd.

While the two officers were together, they were able to find over a million dollars in drug money and several pounds of various kinds of drugs. The dog won numerous awards for his police work along with his partner. He also took home awards for participating in competitions with other K9 officers.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), Cancer eventually took over the 12-year-old's body, and he was unable to deal with how the disease was damaging him. When the department first discovered that Timo had cancer, they were able to treat it in the hopes that the surgery would remove it from his body. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to save a dog who had saved so many other lives.

Officers with the department and Officer Hartman had to make the decision as to whether they would continue trying to treat Timo or put him down so that he wouldn't suffer any longer.

Timo assisted so many people, and it was hard for the officers, especially his partner, to say goodbye to him, but they knew that they couldn't let him live a life of pain any longer. They made the difficult decision to take Timo to a clinic so that he could be kept comfortable until he passed away and crossed the rainbow bridge.

The Department advisory said in their statement:

"Timo located over $3 million dollars in cash, several thousand pounds of marijuana and an immeasurable amount of cocaine and Methamphetamine during his service.  Timo located $1.875 Million dollars hidden in one house while they worked with federal agencies.  In 2017 Timo competed in the 18th Annual K9 Olympics hosted in Denver, Indiana. Timo earned a 2nd place finish in Narcotic Vehicle Interiors and a 3rd place finish in ScentLogix Narcotic."

Some people feel that the department should have continued treating Timo instead of giving in so soon and putting him down. Unfortunately, dogs that have cancer can act like they feel good so that they don't hurt their owners even when they are in severe pain.

The department took every piece of information into account before making their heartbreaking decision.
