All the way back in 1985, things were looking up for Sarah Scantlin. She was enrolled in community college and had just made the drill team, and she had recently been hired at a clothing store. To celebrate her new and exciting job, Sarah went out to a nightclub with friends.

The night of fun and Sarah's bright future abruptly ended when a drunk driver hit Sarah while she walked back to her car. The drunk driver hit her, and sent her flying into the path of another car that also hit her. Sarah was rushed to the hospital but had extensive injuries. Her leg was severely damaged and her skull was crushed. Quickly after arriving, she fell into a coma. Her parents could only watch as their daughter could do nothing but breath.

They were told that they would likely never see Sarah conscious again.

But two decades later, a miracle happened and Sarah woke up. She still couldn't speak and she had to be taught to communicate by blinking once to say "no" and twice to say "yes." It was unclear at this time how intact Sarah's mental abilities were. After all, two decades in a coma is never a good sign.

One day, Sarah's parents received a call. Sarah was on the other line. She said she was fine, but asked her mom for something odd: more makeup.

Doctors were stunned that she could recover the ability to speak, but they hypothesized that her brain managed to repair itself and bring back some mental capabilities.

“I didn’t think it would ever happen, it had been so long," Sarah's mother Betsy said.

It's astonishing that she told her parents that she remained conscious while in the coma for two decades. She was able to keep up to date with the modern world by hearing the television shows playing on the television in her room. She knew about the September 11 terrorist attacks and other events. After waking up, Sarah lived for another 12 years but unfortunately died at age 50 of respiratory failure.
