Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Takes Major Step To Discard Dad Brad Pitt’s Last Name

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt is taking another major step toward leaving her father’s famous surname behind.
The 18-year-old daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has formally moved forward with her request to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie, following months of quietly distancing herself from the Pitt name.
Vivienne initially filed a petition with the Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 21, shortly after turning 18. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the reason given for the requested name change was simply “personal.” Her hearing is currently scheduled for Nov. 2, 2026, when the petition is expected to be considered.
Now, Vivienne has taken the next legal step required under California law. Court documents showed that a legal notice announcing her intended name change was published in the Los Angeles Daily Journal on four occasions during July and August. The newspaper notices are part of the formal process for changing a name in California.
If approved, the teenager will officially become Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.
The decision is not entirely surprising to those who have followed Vivienne’s public appearances in recent years. In 2024, when she was just 15, she was already publicly using “Vivienne Jolie” rather than “Vivienne Jolie-Pitt.”
Her name appeared that way in the Playbill for “The Outsiders,” the Broadway musical she helped her mother produce. Vivienne was credited as a producer assistant on the production and worked closely with Angelina, who has described her daughter as a young artist passionate about supporting others.
Vivienne’s decision also comes amid a broader pattern involving her siblings.

Vivienne’s older sister Shiloh legally dropped “Pitt” from her name in 2024 after filing a petition on her 18th birthday. She is now legally known as Shiloh Jolie.
Then, in 2026, Vivienne’s older siblings Maddox and Zahara also began the legal process of removing Pitt from their surnames. Maddox filed in May, followed by Zahara in June, while Vivienne submitted her petition in July.
The moves come years after Angelina filed for divorce from Brad in 2016, beginning a lengthy and highly publicized legal battle between the former couple.
There have also been reports about the strained relationships between Pitt and his adult children. However, Vivienne’s court documents do not provide details about her personal reasons for seeking the name change.
Angelina has previously indicated that she wants her family to move forward. Following Vivienne’s filing, a source close to Jolie told PEOPLE that the actress “just wants everyone to heal.”
Back in October 2021, Angelina shared details about her relationships with her children, saying they were “six very individual human beings.”
“I am so excited about all the different stages and feelings and curiosities that they go through. Why wouldn’t you be?” Jolie had said.
“We’re supposed to help them figure out who they are. And you can’t figure out who they are if you don’t enthusiastically develop with them.”
For Vivienne, the change appears to represent something deeply personal: choosing the name she wants to carry into adulthood.
And after years of being known around the world as one half of Hollywood’s most famous former couples’ children, she may soon simply be Vivienne Jolie.
