Amy Hunter was enjoying a quiet evening at home, not far from Smith Mountain Lake. She was sitting outside on her deck and a strange formation of clouds began to roll in. She describes the clouds as literally rolling and "crashing like waves."

The rare cloud cover caught the attention of others who were near the lake in Virginia that evening. The many individuals who saw the photos of the moment on social media were equally amazed.

It was a little after eight at night when Amy spotted what looked like waves moving across the Virginia sky. The name weathermen attach to this phenomenon is Kelvin-Helmholtz waves. Amy says a storm front was present in the area just before she saw the waves. She couldn't believe what she was seeing and hurriedly reached for her phone. She says she was only able to snap a couple of photos before the whole thing crashed like a wave:

“A few minutes later a rainbow appeared, so Mother Nature was putting on a show that evening!” Amy told PEOPLE.

To the casual observer, the clouds look as if they were perched atop a nearby mountain. Amy says the clouds created a barrier between the green of the mountaintop and the gray of the sky. She shared the photos with a local news station. A meteorologist working for the news station told her it is a rare thing to see such clouds. He also said the clouds she captured were much more defined than usual.

"I’m just lucky I got to see it!" Amy says. The National Weather Service told her the waves occur when the wind is moving and changing directions at a rapid pace. The weather service indicated that the clouds often appear as breaking waves. They sometimes take the form of braided patterns in photos and radar images.

Amy posted the photos to Facebook where they were shared almost one thousand times.

She says the photos were also shared on other social media sites. She knew the photos would be enjoyed by people who had never seen such a rare formation of clouds, but then she turned out to be more correct than she ever could have imagined.
