When we envision running a race, we generally think of trying to get to the finish line first! However, that goal was set off course a bit during a recent charity run. Rather than racing to the finish line, many of the participants were taking a little detour to do something else before completing their run.

During the charity race, a WW2 veteran had decided to stand on the sidewalk with his hard-back chair nearby, watching and cheering for the runners. Dressed in his old uniform, the veteran surely expected to simply enjoy the beautiful afternoon while showing his support to those in the race.

As the racers passed the elderly man, several of them nodded their head and gave looks of appreciation. What happened next was amazing!

One man left the race completely, making a detour onto the sidewalk so that he could extend a hand and thank the veteran for his service. This act of respect and appreciation started a chain reaction among the other racers. Within a few seconds, racers began to pour down the sidewalk, embracing the hand of the veteran and telling him how thankful they were for his service.

The veteran was completely stunned by this change of events; however, you can tell by the look in his proud eyes that he appreciates every minute of it.

Too often, we tend to forget the amazing sacrifice that our war heroes have made in an effort to keep us safe. Studying this elderly man, we can only imagine the struggles that he may have had while defending his country and protecting the innocent.

Hopefully during the charity run, he was reminded that we still appreciate all that he has done and that he is still a hero even though he is no longer able to fight in the war.
