Vet Receives Sweet 'Thanks' After Freeing Chained Horse

Although we often differentiate between humans and animals, we are animals. Even though we're the smartest beings on planet Earth, people all across the globe abuse animals. It's saddening to realize that most dogs, cats, equine, bovine, and other animals aren't rescued from their poor living conditions prior to death.

However, it is nice to hear heartwarming stories about people rescuing abused animals left for dead by their neglectful owners. This particular horse from Romania was in a horrible state when it was finally rescued by the global animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS International in 2016.

In many parts of the world, horses are usually given enough room to roam around freely, food to eat, water to drink, and freedom to do virtually whatever they want as long as they do it inside the confines of the fences that hold them in.

However, the widespread treatment of horses in the United States isn't how Romanian society treats horses. Horses across Romania are regularly chained by their legs to property owners' land, according to FOUR PAWS International. This is cheaper than erecting and maintaining fences, though it isn't fair to the animals.

When the Tatars, the people who brought horses to the area, left what is now modern-day Romania, they left quite a few of the animals to live in the wild, according to Animal Channel. For centuries, they trotted around freely.

More recently, the majority of horses kept in captivity were let loose in 1989 due to co-ops widely failing across the nation, the website reports. With horses free to mingle with one another, their population skyrocketed to roughly 1,500 in just the Danube Delta region.

Keep in mind that the Danube Delta is a small area, measuring roughly one-sixtieth of Romania's landmass.

Romanian officials and environmentalists allowed people to thin out the booming horse population, resulting in torturous acts being committed against them, Animal Channel claims. Ovidiu Rosu recently found a horse chained in the Romanian countryside.

Rosu did what he had to do. He cut the thick metal bands off of its legs, revealing that the pieces of metal had rubbed off all the skin in the area. Just as Rosu released the injured horse into the wild after fixing it up, one of its friends touched noses with the vet.
