Vanessa Bryant Reveals Why Late Husband Kobe Bryant Gifted Her The Dress From 'The Notebook' Movie

During a public memorial service for Kobe Bryant and his daughter on Monday, February 24, Vanessa Bryant tearfully remembered one of the particularly meaningful gifts she had ever received from her late husband: a dress from the romantic drama film The Notebook.

“A Celebration of Life for Kobe and Gianna Bryant” took place in the Staples Center in Los Angeles about a month after basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna had tragically passed away in a helicopter crash on January 26.

Family members, friends and thousands of fans came together for the memorial event to honor the lives of Kobe, Gianna and the other seven victims of the helicopter crash. During the event, Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife and Gianna’s mother, delivered an emotional eulogy that left most visitors in tears.

In her eulogy, Vanessa held back tears talking about losing her baby girl Gianna and her beloved husband Kobe whom she called a doting father and a loving husband. She reiterated Kobe’s romantic side remembering the extraordinary gifts and anniversary trips he used to surprise her with. She especially brought up one of her favorite gifts she had ever gotten from him and revealed the special meaning behind it:

“He gave me the actual notebook and the blue dress that Rachel McAdams wore in The Notebook movie. When I asked him why he chose the blue dress, he said it was because it’s the scene when Allie comes back to Noah.”

The Notebook movie from 2004 is one of the most acclaimed romantic films of all time and tells the story of a young couple who falls in love in the 1940s. The dress Kobe gifted Vanessa for Valentine’s Day is a pale blue, short-sleeved dress with a buttoned front that Rachel McAdams’ Character, Allie, wears in one of the key scenes of the movie when she reunites with the love of her life, Ryan Gosling’s character Noah.

Vanessa revealed, that she and Kobe “had hoped to grow old together like in the movie. We really had an amazing love story. We loved each other with our whole beings. Two perfectly imperfect people making a beautiful family and raising our sweet and amazing girls.”
