'Unicorn' Dog With One Ear At The Center Of Her Head Gains Adoring Fans Online

Rae the golden retriever has become an internet celebrity because of her adorable defect: a single ear growing out of the middle of her head, aptly nicknaming her as "unicorn dog."

Unicorns are adorable, but puppies? Even better. If you are a fan of both puppies and unicorns, then you will love little Rae!

You may remember Narwhal, the famous 'unicorn' puppy who gained his fame from an unusual birth defect. Little Narwhal has a tail growing out of his forehead—strange, but cute! He was rescued by a nonprofit animal rescue shelter called Mac's Mission.

His happy ending began when he was later adopted by the founder of the company, Rochelle Steffen. Narwhal's condition was caused by a congenital birth defect. His veterinarian, Dr. Brian Heuring claimed to have never seen a puppy with two tails, much less the second being on the dog's forehead.

He is not sure why the puppy grew an additional tail, but he speculates that it could be due to toxins present at conception. After an x-ray, it was concluded that the tail did not have any bony features, meaning that it could not function as a normal tail.

Any surgeries done to remove the tail would be purely cosmetical because the tail had no real impact on the puppy. However, Dr. Heuring had high hopes for Narwhal's future. He was a living example that being different is not such a bad thing.

This does not signal the end for dog/unicorn lovers, though. A new unicorn pup has made her appearance! Rae, a golden retriever puppy has also been found to have a similar condition. Instead of a tail, she has an ear growing out of the top of her head.

According to VT, due to an accidental injury during her birth, Rae had lost her left ear. It was damaged and needed to be removed. As she grew up, her right ear slowly moved towards the top of her head. The end result is a unicorn-pup look.

After Rae's owner, Brianna Vorhees posted a few photos and videos of her puppy to her social media, they immediately gained immense popularity. As a result, Brianna created a few social media accounts that would be solely meant for Rae's fans.

Ever since she set up an Instagram account for Rae in February, the puppy has gained, as of this writing, more than 240,000 followers! The biography of Rae's account reads:

"An accident at birth left me with one ear that migrated to the top of my head! I also can hear"

Rae also owns a TikTok account that has amassed a large following. Her most popular video has almost 4 million views! While she has gained internet fame, some of the credit must go to her owner for accepted the challenge of raising Rae.

Brianna was originally a receptionist at the veterinarian's office where Rae was to have her ear removal surgery. After hearing that Rae would need an entire day of attentive care post-surgery, Brianna was immediately drawn to the pup.

"She has no idea that she is different and leads a very normal life. She has been a blessing to me, and it has been my pleasure to raise her," Brianna stated in an interview with BBC. Rae's journey has also been an inspiration for her name. One thing many of her fans laugh about when first meeting Rae is that 'Rae' is 'ear' spelled backward.
