“Unadoptable” Shelter Dog Who Was Supposed To Be Put Down Ends Up Saving Passed Out Teenager In The Woods

It's heartbreaking to think about all the amazing dogs that are currently sitting alone in shelters, waiting to be adopted. Most of us wish that we could adopt each and every one of these sweet dogs, who just want a loving home after a lifetime of feeling unwanted.

Ruby was a sweet Australian Shepherd puppy who'd been declared "unadoptable" by a local shelter. Although Ruby was but eight months of age, shelter workers were concerned she'd never find a loving home after being adopted and returned to the shelter a shocking five times, reports TODAY. Ruby was sweet and showed no signs of aggression, but she was unusually wild. For most families, this little ball of energy was simply too much to handle.

Tragically, the shelter declared that Ruby would have to be euthanized. One shelter volunteer was disturbed at the idea that this pup would receive a death sentence for the crime of being too energetic. In a last ditch effort to save Ruby's life, the volunteer called his connection at the local police station and asked if Ruby could have a shot at becoming a police dog. In a miraculous turn of events, the police approved the volunteer's request.

Officer Dan O'Neil decided to take Ruby home himself, as he'd be partnering up with the pooch for her K-9 Unit training. The transition was not without its struggles. The first thing the rambunctious pup did upon arriving at her new home was to leave a special "gift" on the rug at Officer O'Neil's house! The years passed for Officer O'Neil and his new friend. The dog once deemed unfit for adoption slowly began to respond to her police dog training, under the guidance of professional dog trainer Pat Inman. Ruby didn't just learn how to become a police dog but rather became one of the finest search and rescue dogs that the state of Rhode Island has ever seen.

Over Ruby's 10 year career as a police dog, she's been responsible for finding dozens of missing persons, many alive. Most notably was the case of a teenage boy who got lost and injured while hiking in the woods. The moment Ruby got the boy's scent at the edge of the woods, she bolted down a ravine and didn't stop until she was at the boy's side. He was unconscious and needed medical care, but he survived thanks to Ruby's skills as a police dog.

In the biggest twist that brought tears to the eyes of everyone in their local community, the missing teenage boy who was saved by Ruby was the son of Pat Inman herself, the woman who'd trained Ruby all those years ago. Be sure to show this amazing story to all of the animal lovers in your life.
