U.K. School Only Allows Boys To Wear Skirts Instead Of Shorts During Warmer Months

A school in Oxfordshire in South England has made it much easier for boys to remain comfortable at school, despite the weather conditions. As part of the new gender-neutral uniform policy, boys at the Chiltern Edge Secondary School in Sonning Common are now allowed to choose between either trousers or skirts as part of the official wardrobe guidelines.

According to the Mirror, the new policy came as a result of other area schools adopting gender-neutral policies in an effort to help transgender students feel more comfortable and at ease while attending school. The Equality Act directs schools to protect their transgender students from discrimination.

While some applaud the new policy, other parents are not in support of the rules. Parent Alastair Vince-Porteous told The Mirror that he wanted his son to be able to wear tailored shorts instead of a skirt. However, school management said that shorts were not part of the uniform package.

 "I was told shorts are not part of the uniform. It's a shame we can't be more grown-up about it. We aren't asking for a rara skirt or skinny jeans, just tailored shorts for two months a year. It's not a big deal."

As it stands now, boys can choose to wear traditional trousers or a skirt if they would like to keep cool during the warm summer months.

Headteacher Moira Green said to the tabloid that the decision to move to a more formal uniform policy was made in September 2017 wth the implementation happening in September 2018. The school currently is home to a little over 500 students, even though it has a capacity for 900 pupils.
