Following her time in the hospital, which was in 2018, Grace was being instructed on how to use sign language to communicate when WJW Cleveland became involved with the little girl. Valerie, who is Grace’s mom, was trying to obtain cochlear implants designed to make her daughter’s speech stronger and improve the quality of the child’s life.

Grace was approved to get the hearing device at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. The implants would give her the ability to hear sounds she was never able to hear before. Hearing sounds such as her mother speaking and her name would be a new experience for her. Grace’s mother explained that when the cochlear implants allowed her baby girl to hear sounds for the first time, her daughter’s reaction was so intense the tot quivered from head to toe.
