Two Men, 41, Devastated After Discovering They Were Switched At Birth And Raised By Wrong Parents

Many parents consider it their job to protect their children as much as possible and do whatever it takes to give them the best life that they can. Children rely heavily on their parents when they’re younger, and begin to appreciate all of their hard work and dedication to raising them when they’re older. For many parents, their greatest fear is losing a child or doing something that could hurt their child. This love and care for one another is what can create such a tight-knit family.

A pair of 41-year-old friends in Canada discovered a hard truth in August 2016. The people that they had come to know and love as their own parents were actually each other’s. David Tait and Leon Swanson had somehow been switched at birth and raised by the opposite set of parents. When DNA testing confirmed it, they were devastated by the news.

For years, people questioned the best friends about their families and pointed out how they each looked like they should have been members of the other family rather than their own. It turned out that everyone’s suspicions were true and that after Tait and Swanson were born, they had been sent home from the hospital with the wrong set of parents.

This case has gone on to be shared with media outlets all over the world with others wondering if something like this could have happened to them, too. Read on to find out more about this shocking case of two best friends and their families.

According to Yahoo News, Tait and Swanson learned that they had been switched at birth in August 2016. They were best friends growing up and it seemed like they were always one big happy family, but people couldn’t help but point out how they looked like they belonged in each other’s family rather than their own. “Since we were like 20 years old, people been teasing us… jokes and all that,” Swanson said.

Swanson and Tait were both born in a federally run hospital in Manitoba called Norway House Hospital. Their DNA tests showed that the unthinkable happened and that the hospital had sent them home with their wrong parents back in 1975.

Surprisingly, this is the second case of a pair of babies being switched at birth to come from the hospital, according to Yahoo News. They had been born a few months after Tait and Swanson, and found out the news back in November 2015.

A press conference was held in Winnipeg shortly after Tait and Swanson found out the truth, and the two 41-year-old men demanded to know what happened all those years ago. “40 years gone — I don’t know — distraught, confused, angry,” Tait said. “We want answers. We want answers. I want answers so bad.”

Jane Philpott, the Canadian Health Minister at the time, spoke with Reuters about the two cases and explained just how much the second case “deeply troubled” her. “Cases like this are an unfortunate reminder to Canadians of how urgent the need is to provide all Indigenous people with high-quality health care,” she said.
