Elizabeth and Ann were twins who had to spend years of their lives apart – so long that they even have a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The girls' mother, Alice Lamb, had an unfortunate life. When her daughters were born in 1936, she had little choice but to put them up for adoption. Unfortunately, as Elizabeth had a spinal condition, she wasn't adopted and the girls were separated for most of their lives and didn't even know about each other.

However, after some digging, Ann found out about Elizabeth and the two finally met one another for a joyful reunion.

The story starts in 1936 when a single mom named Alice Lamb living in England discovered that she was pregnant with twins. With the girl’s father out of the picture, no family that would help out, and a bad job situation, Alice decided that it would be best to put her babies up for adoption.

As it turned out, this plan wasn’t foolproof. Little Elizabeth was born with a spinal condition that ruined her chances at adoption. Realizing that she was the best option for the baby, Alice decided to keep her and just put Ann up for adoption.

Elizabeth and Alice didn’t have an easy time of things. Alice had difficulties finding employment, so they sometimes had to spend time apart and moved frequently. When Elizabeth was an adult, she joined the Navy, married a fellow Navy-soldier from the United States, and ended up moving to America to put down roots, as reported here in The Guardian.

Meanwhile, Ann also got married but she stayed in England. She didn’t know that she was adopted until she was a teenager. While she wanted to know more about her biological family, she waited until 2001 to suggest that her daughter help her find them.

Ann’s daughter took on the challenge and began her detective work. After years of searching, she finally found Elizabeth and was able to connect the two through letters and Skype calls.

But the twins weren’t going to stay apart forever! After being separated for almost 78-years, it was time for them to get back together. The two women were able to meet each other and, for the first time in their lives outside the womb, they could touch, hug, and see one another in person.

We’re so glad to hear a story with a happy ending and so relieved that these two women got to meet each other once again. Have you ever known twins that were separated?
