Jamie experienced several rounds of fertility treatments, so she was elated to find out that she was finally pregnant! She learned that she was actually having twins 14 days later.

Jamie's pregnancy was going very well until the day she thought that she was having Braxton-Hicks contractions. She was actually in labor at that time. While she was at the hospital the next morning, she began to bleed.

The nurses checked her out and discovered that she was dilated to 10 centimeters. They needed to rush her to surgery to undergo an emergency cesarean section.

With the birth, Everly and Maverick were born three months prematurely. After 24 weeks, they only weighed 1 lb. and 9 oz. The babies were also diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus, a condition that caused them to have holes in their hearts according to the American Heart Association.

While they were in the womb, their blood vessels didn't close properly, so their blood began to flow in the opposite direction of where it was supposed to flow. The staff gave each baby a series of treatments for their condition, but none of them worked. Both babies would need to undergo a surgery that had never been done before.

The director of Pediatric Interventional Cardiology at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's told WKYC that the device that is usually employed for this type of condition cannot be used on premature babies because it is too big.

The drugs and surgery also pose serious side effects for their littlest patients. Dr. Martin Bocks is experienced in treating babies with this condition, and he was privileged to be able to try a new therapy that was just approved by the FDA called the Amplatzer Piccolo Occluder.

Now that Dr. Bocks is on the case, the twins could have their surgery six weeks after their birth. They were the smallest babies Dr. Bocks has ever had the pleasure to operate on in his career.

"They are so fantastic now. They don't even have scars from the surgery." says mom Jamie to The Doctors.
