Princess Diana’s memory has been honored through countless events and celebrations since her passing in 1997. The Princess of Wales has created a lasting impression on British culture and on the way the royal family operates. Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children, as well as Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their two children have kept Diana’s memory alive through their words and actions as they have worked to pay tribute to and celebrate the late princess.

Here are 10 times the younger royals have honored Diana:

The Book

Meghan wrote a children's book called "The Bench" and discussed it with NPR in June 2021. During the interview, Meghan told Samantha Balaban that there were a few special Easter eggs hidden in the illustrations. "I think you can find sweet little moments that we've tucked in there," she said. "From my favorite flower, even my husband's mom's favorite flower, forget-me-nots, we wanted to make sure they were included in there. There's a lot of special detail and love that went into that book."

Prince Charles proposed to Diana with an 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring from Garrard. After she died, the ring was passed down, and William used it to propose to Kate in 2010.

The Royal Tour

William’s birth on June 21, 1982 gave the royal family another member to add for succession to the throne, and it also gave Diana a chance to show off her new bundle of joy. She took a 9-month-old William with her when she had major tours in Australia and New Zealand. Harry and Meghan did the same when they traveled to the same countries with their son Archie, who was 8 months old at the time.

Diana had previously been president of the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea, and William was sure to follow in his mother’s footsteps when he took the same role in 2007.

The Hymn

William and Harry made sure to honor their mother and make her presence known at their weddings to their respective wives, and it has come with waves of emotion for the sons. The guests at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018 sang “Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer.” This hymn was also sung at William and Kate’s wedding in 2011, and it was originally sung at Diana’s funeral in 1997.

The Sisters

The royal family has worked on staying by each other’s side during special occasions, and there was no exception to this on the day of Archie’s christening. Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, both Diana’s sisters, were present at Archie’s christening in 2019 and were even part of the official portrait.

Most recently, the sisters were seen at the unveiling of Princess Diana's statue at the Sunken Garden in London. They joined their nephews William and Harry for the event.

The Forget-Me-Nots

Diana has certainly not been forgotten, especially by members of the royal family. When Harry and Meghan shared an adorable photo on Instagram of Archie’s feet on Mother’s Day in 2019, Diana’s favorite flowers, forget-me-nots, were visible in the background. Meghan also honored the late princess by having the flower in her wedding bouquet.

The Instagram Quote

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared many sweet moments on Instagram, including a kindness quote from Diana. They captioned the post and wrote, “Words have the power to inspire, which is why we’re happy to share some of our favorite quotes.”

Diana and Charles announced they were expecting their second child, Harry, on Valentine’s Day in 1984. To honor his mother, Harry and his wife Meghan held tight to that moment, and 37 years later announced that they were expecting their second child on Feb. 14, 2021.

Charlotte's Name

Princess Charlotte was born on 2 May 2015 at 8lb 3oz. Her full name is Charlotte Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, and both William and Kate were able to honor Diana with their daughter's middle name.

The Mother’s Days Cards

Celebrating Mother’s Day in March 2021, the Cambridge family shared a loving message to everyone celebrating in the United Kingdom and showed how their three children honor their late grandmother. The caption read, “Each year on Mother’s Day, George, Charlotte and Louis make cards remembering their Granny, Diana, for William.” William and Kate also had some kind words for anyone struggling, and wrote, “Whatever your circumstances, we are thinking of you this Mother’s Day.”

Lili’s Name

Just like how his older brother and sister-in-law honored Diana with their daughter’s name, Harry chose to do the same when Meghan gave birth to their daughter Lilibet. The baby’s middle name is Diana in remembrance of her grandmother.
