TV Celeb Simon Cowell Donates $32,000 To Fight Against Dog Cruelty In South Korea

If you are a dog lover, or even if you just want to see them raised in humane conditions, it is a heart-breaker to realize that there are dog meat farms in South Korea where the animals live in cages, are bred over and over again, and then killed for the sake of the dog meat industry.

The dog meat trade is one of the most serious animal welfare issues in that country.

The generous funds from the popular multi-millionaire, reality television judge, producer, and animal rights advocate were given to the charity organization Humane Society International (HSI) to rescue approximately 200 dogs and puppies.

That will aid HSI's task of ending animal cruelty and the consumption of dog meat in South Korea and other places throughout the world. HSI is a protection organization with the aim to help all animals including those in laboratories, on farms, wildlife, and companion animals.

HSI has gained world approval, and when Simon's attention was brought to the issue, he was quick to condemn the act and contribute to the dog rescues and toward the shutdown of those farms. So far, HSI has saved about 1,400 animals.

It is believed that there are still over 17,000 such farms in South Korea alone, where it is estimated that more than 2.5 million dogs are killed each year for their meat. There are laws excluding canines from being used as a meat source, but they don't hold in numerous parts of Asia.

Claire Bass, HSI's UK executive director, said that Simon’s donation provides a huge boost to their appeal to close these horrendous dog meat farms.

Their goal is that with every dog farm they close and with every farmer they help to change to a more profitable and humane business, they are showing the South Korean government that it is possible to end this cruel trade.

On their website, HSI thanked the TV star for his generous act.

You can watch Simon Cowell's reaction in the video below:

However, they still have to encourage more people to rise against this animal cruelty and stop this type of barbaric act for good. It requires a strong collective work of a large multitude of dog lovers to end this type of menace.

As a result of actions by animal rights activists, the consumption of dog meat has become less common among the younger South Koreans, so the practice seems to be significantly declining.
