Tree Trunk Struck By Lightning Burns From Inside Out

On July 15th, a tree trunk in Wales, Maine, caught fire as it was struck by lightning during a storm. The local fire department recorded footage of the burning tree and posted it on social media for the world to see.

The video depicts an eerie sight: the tree seemingly caught fire on the inside and quickly travels upwards as the background shows a gloomy, grey sky, and rain.

“Units are currently operating at lightning struck vs tree on Leeds junction road,” the Wales Fire Department captioned the footage.

Thankfully, the rain contained the inferno to the single tree, meaning it did not spread to the surrounding woods.

The video quickly attracted many comments from bewildered locals, with one writing it was the “coolest thing” they’d ever seen. “Glad everyone is OK,” they added. Media outlets also picked up on the story, with WHCF-FM humorously saying: “You gotta admit 2020 does not disappoint in the 'Never saw that one coming' department.”

Although seemingly unusual, it wasn’t the first time such an occurrence took place. In 2017, another video showed a tree in a cemetery in the St Louis area catch fire in the same manner.

Viewers were in awe at the bizarre phenomenon, with one even calling it a “scene from the afterlife” in the comments.

One thing is for sure though: the videos reminded us to take shelter when the weather is on the crazy side – just not under a tree!
