Balms, ointments, and salves are especially good ways to use your essential oils for a number of reasons. First, you should never use essential oil on your skin by itself. It's important to dilute your oils so they don't burn you. You can also incorporate other ingredients, like soothing jojoba oil, into your homemade balms. These natural oils help keep the essential oils on your skin longer.

This homemade antihistamine balm is perfect for treating allergies of all kinds.

You can use it to relieve the symptoms of hay fever, unblock a stuffy nose, and treat hives and rashes. You can even dab some on insect bites and stings.

Keep this balm in your medicine cabinet, purse, or first-aid kit to treat itching and swelling - it's portable and convenient!

How to Make Your Own Allergy-Relieving Antihistamine Balm at Home

What You'll Need

  • Several small containers with screw-on lids
  • 3 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 2 tsp. oil of your choice, such as jojoba oil
  • 1.5 oz. local beeswax, chopped into small pieces
  • Lemon essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Frankincense essential oil

Instructions

1. Melt your beeswax in a double boiler over low heat.

2. Get your containers ready. Make sure they are clean and dry.

3. Measure out your coconut oil.

4. When the beeswax is melted, stir in your coconut oil and jojoba oil until combined.

5. Take the pan off the heat. Stir in 10 drops each of the lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oils. Then add 6 drops of the frankincense essential oil.

6. Be cautious when you add your oils - you don't want to add too much.

7. Stir the mixture well.

8. Pour the mixture into your containers.

9. Let your containers cool for an hour.

10. Check your containers after an hour. If the bottom still feels warm, let them sit for a while longer.

11. Once the balm is cool, screw the lids on and label the containers.

12. You're done! Stash your containers of antihistamine balm in a cool, dark place.

How to Use Your Antihistamine Balm

To use your antihistamine balm, just rub a small amount on your irritated skin. If you're using it to relieve hay fever or sinus congestion, dab some on your chest or underneath your nose.
