Just like people, animals often need help. When an animal is in danger, it is important to do everything that you can for it. Whether that means contacting your local animal control department or doing what you can yourself, helping an animal in distress is an amazing act of compassion. Recently, the superintendent of a golf club in Texas got a chance to help a great horned owl in a life or death situation.

As reported by The Urban Politico, Craig Loving was working at Austin’s Lost Creek Country Club when his employees told him of a very peculiar situation. The group had been monitoring an owl that had settled on a small tree in a pond near the club’s first tee box. Looking after the beautiful creature for the past 12 hours, Craig and his staff determined that the owl was stuck on the tree.

Considering what to do, Craig volunteered to go into the pond and try to help the creature.

As Craig put on waders, the owl’s three-foot wingspan and incredibly sharp talons were on his mind. Going into the water, Craig determined that the owl’s wing was wrapped around a nylon fishing line. Using a pair of pliers, Craig clipped the fishing line and slowly began untangling the owl’s wings from the line.

Craig went about his task as quickly as he could but remained cautious. While the owl was too tired to do anything to resist Craig, he nevertheless slammed his beak on the tree several times, as if telling Craig that he did not approve of his actions.

Slowly but surely, Craig unwrapped the fishing line from the owl’s wings. While intimidated by the large bird, Craig said that being so close to the owl and helping it out of its predicament was incredibly cool. Once the owl’s wings were disentangled from the fishing line, one of Craig’s friends handed him a shovel. Placing the wooden handle near the owl’s feet, Craig coaxed the giant bird onto the new perch.

Once the animal had settled down, Craig walked him to the nearby shore. Placing him on the grass near a tree, Craig could see that despite the traumatic ordeal, the owl appeared to be in perfect health. After resting for a few moments, the owl flew away. Looking back at the whole incident, Craig said that it was something that he never experienced before.

News of Craig’s heroism quickly spread on social media and with local news stations. The Lost Creek Country Club’s official YouTube page later posted a video of the rescue that has since been watched over 1.7 million times.

All in all, Craig’s rescue of the great horned owl is a reminder of the good that comes from helping animals. Rather than leaving the owl to fend for itself, Craig saved its life and became a hero.

What do you think of how Craig saved the great horned owl that was trapped in the fishing line? What would you have done if you were in a similar situation? Let us know, and be sure to pass this on to friends and family members — and especially to fellow animal lovers.
