While on a beach in Thailand, Canadian tourist Meagan Penman saw an injured dog. The dog was trying to drag itself across the sand. Upon closer inspection, Meagan saw that the dog had terrible wounds on its legs and that it was malnourished. Shocked by the dog's appearance, she did everything that she could in order to help.

Meagan took the injured dog to a local veterinarian. An X-ray showed that the dog's spine was broken. It is likely that the dog had been hit by a motorbike, motorcycle or car. No local shelters would accept the dog, and the veterinarian told her that the dog should probably be euthanized.

Meagan thought otherwise. She figured that the dog's fighting spirit and will to live meant something more. She vowed to rescue the dog and take it home to Canada.

Meagan got to work raising $2,000 Canadian to transport the dog back to Canada on an airplane. She named the dog Leo, and his story made the news in her hometown.

Although Leo could not stay in Meagan's apartment, she found an adoptive home for him.

Leo got the veterinary treatment that he needed. He now gets around with a sort of dog wheel chair for his back legs. Leo continues to heal, and there is a good chance that his back legs might get strong enough in order for him to walk on them and become mobile on four paws once again.
