Tom Selleck’s Daughter Says He Requested One Thing Before Supporting Her

Tom Selleck is a beloved actor known for a plethora of famous roles. While Tom captured the audience's hearts through the big screen, he had captured the heart of his wife, Jillie Mack, and started a family.

Tom wanted to keep his personal life out of the spotlight, and even put his career on pause to focus on fatherhood.

Tom worked hard pursuing his passion for acting and raised his daughter with similar values. His daughter, Hannah Selleck, discovered her own passion for horseback riding when she was just a child and has managed to make it a long-lasting career.

Much like her father, Hannah grew up loving nature and the outdoors. Luckily, she was raised on the family ranch in California, where she had plenty of space to play and explore outside. Hannah began riding horses at four-years-old and began competing 10 years later.

Hannah went to Loyola Marymount University and successfully earned her degree, landing herself a career in public relations. She quickly got a job at a PR firm in Beverly Hills but missed riding horses. Hannah ended up ultimately quitting her job to focus on her real passion in life: horseback riding.

Hannah has most certainly proved herself as an equestrian. She qualified for the Grand Prix level of competition and has won several international medals. Some of her accomplishments include finishing in the top-five in Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and at the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix.

Even an injury couldn’t stop Hannah from pursuing her passion. She embraced her love of horseback riding to sustain a career and care for her favorite animals. Her father had one request, though, before she was able to fully move forward with her career.

Tom and Jillie met backstage at a musical performance of "Cats." Jillie was in the production and made the first move before she began her performance. They also worked together on the show “Magnum P.I.” in 1980. Tom married the English actress during a private ceremony in 1987. Their lives changed when their daughter was born just a year later. 

Tom dedicated his life to his daughter and took a break from his incredibly successful career in acting. Some of Tom’s most prominent films include “Three Men and a Baby” and “Three Men and a Little Lady.” 

Having a child did not halt their romantic life together. According to Closer Weekly, Tom wakes up early to put on the teakettle so his wife can fix herself a cup right when she wakes up.

“I think I’m pretty romantic,” Tom expressed to Closer Weekly. The couple lives on their 65-acre ranch with their dogs. The couple raises horses and grows avocados. They are able to enjoy a peaceful life together thanks to their serene environment, such as being surrounded by orchards and ponds at their home. The couple loves their home so much they hope that their daughter will want to get married there one day, according to Closer Weekly.

It is unclear if Hannah will live up to her parents’ dream since she already has a home away from home. While the family ranch is Hannah’s physical residence, her love for riding horses has helped to make any place where she can pursue that dream feel like a home.

During an interview with Blenheim EquiSports, Hannah revealed more about her past that brought her to her current status as a professional horse rider. The interview segment was appropriately titled “Three Men and a Selleck.”

Hannah expressed how competing at Blenheim felt like coming home. “What’s better than being on the grass by the ocean in the O.C.?” The scene during the interview was breathtaking, showing wide open spaces for horses to run in the warm California heat.

Hannah went into a little more detail about being talented in another sport. She revealed that she picked between focusing on her current life as a horse rider and the chance to become a ballerina. Hannah said that she most likely would be a ballerina if she wasn’t already an equestrian.

A potential career-threatening accident occurred while competing in Calgary in June 2018. Hannah’s horse made a mistake, causing the equestrian to get her foot stuck in the magnetic stirrup connected to her riding boots. She shattered her tibia and fibula, resulting in a broken leg.

After six hours of surgery, physical therapy and a few months away from the sport, Hannah made an epic return. She won second place at a show in San Juan Capistrano, California.

Her constant drive helped Hannah recover and continues to help her stay in shape. She practices a lot, almost every day, in fact, except for Mondays. Hannah also stays fit by working out throughout the week by running, going to spin classes and working with a trainer. She has even taken up boxing.

Hannah has shown off her athletic skills in many media outlets. She was featured on the cover of the celebration issue of Equestrio, a magazine designated to the world of horses and horseback riders. The platform’s slogan is: “The world through an equestrian’s lens.” A video was uploaded showing the process of creating the cover shot featuring Hannah.

With some help from a professional photographer and a group of stylists, Hannah looked beautiful as her photo was captured repeatedly in many set-up scenes. The video of the escapade showed photographer Juan Lamarca taking pictures of Hannah as she performs a multitude of activities. Hannah played tennis and croquet. She even looked gorgeous as she swam in a pool. The equestrian posed in a few different locations, including looking luxurious while sitting on an outside sofa.

The video ended with the caption: “Riders stepping out.” By showing off her other talents, even if for only a few minutes, Hannah stepped outside of her comfort zone of being a horseback rider while still looking glamorous.

Her love for horses has always been in the forefront, though, as she explained to Palm Beach Illustrated.

“Riding is always my priority,” Hannah said during an interview with the magazine.

While riding is her priority, it doesn’t mean it is the only thing she pursues. According to Closer Weekly, Hannah is in school to earn an MBA. Her career is an expensive one, so understanding how to balance her finances while also having a back-up career is a smart step for the equestrian to take.

During an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated, Hannah went into more detail about her love of riding.

While most people hope to make their hobby their full-time job, Hannah has had a hard time taking a step away from work. She currently runs Descanso Farm, a boutique horse-breeding operation near her family’s ranch. She uses her free time to continue training horses on the farm.

The farm is dedicated to helping train young horses and advancing show horses’ careers. The farm prides itself on providing their horses with plenty of attention and proper care.

“For me, it’s always work,” Hannah told Palm Beach Illustrated. “We’re always working for a goal and we prepare for weeks for that one to two minutes in the arena. I’m always thinking about what we need to do to improve.”

Hannah’s love for horses has been put to good use. She is currently an ambassador for Brooke USA, an organization dedicated to improving the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules. According to Brooke USA, Hannah is known for being a show jumper. The organization has other ambassadors that are leaders in show jumping, polo and dressage.

The organization has a strong focus on female empowerment and international advocacy. Brooke USA Ambassadors are established in their careers in the equestrian field. They use their status to help fundraise and educate others on how to help working horses, donkeys and mules.

“I hope that I can inspire others, especially equestrians, to support this cause,” Hannah told Brooke USA. She is currently raising awareness by speaking to the youth, working on committees and promoting events held by Brooke USA.

The love and support of her family, especially her parents, has definitely been a factor in Hannah’s success.

Hannah has both an American and British passport since most of her mother’s family lives in England. She spends a great deal of time in Wellington.

“The English countryside is so stunning, especially from horseback,” Hannah told Palm Beach Illustrated. “It is so exhilarating, galloping over miles of land, jumping the natural obstacles like ditches, gates and hedges.”

Hannah explained how her parents encouraged her to follow her passion. Since her passion is horses and she grew up riding, it wasn’t hard for her to make the commitment.

“Once I finished university [at Loyola Marymount] and decided I wanted to pursue my passion,” Hannah explained, “my father said he would help support me, but that I had to turn professional, letting go of my amateur status, and work for top professionals in the sport in order to learn my craft.”

Hannah did just that. She apprenticed with industry professionals and honed in on her craft. She made her passion her career.

“I want to keep going on the journey and see where it takes me,” Hannah said. “But whatever that future brings, horses will always be part of my life.”

Hannah has managed to be successful doing what she loves most, thanks to the endless love and support from her parents Tom and Jillie. She has come out from under her parents’ shadows and made a name for herself as both an equestrian and a philanthropist. While Hannah may not know everything the future has in store for her, she knows she can always rely on her four-legged friends.
